ASTON, Pa. – The Huskies outscored Goldey Beacom 17-2 between the two games of the doubleheader as the Bloomsburg University softball team swept its twin bill with the Lighting Sunday afternoon. The Huskies took the first game 13-2 in five innings before completing the sweep with a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.
Â
In the opening game, the Huskies scored early and often as they plated eight runs in the opening inning. Senior
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) got things started by drawing a bases-loaded walk to give Bloomsburg a 1-0 lead. Senior
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) beat out an infield single to short with the bases still loaded to drive home senior
Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) for the 2-0 advantage. A wild pitch brought home sophomore
Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) before senior
Paige Thomas (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) reached on a fielder's choice, and Barnes came around to score.
Â
Sophomore
Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) capped the scoring in the first as she cleared the bases with a three-run home run over the left-field fence to give the Huskies an 8-0 lead. The home run was the first of her career at Bloomsburg.
Â
After a scoreless second inning for both teams, senior
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) pushed the Huskies' lead to 9-0 with a single to shortstop with Starr on second. Starr took third on the hit and came home to score thanks to a throwing error by the shortstop. Alexis Gemberling put runners on second and third after she took second after singling down the right-field line. DelPierre gave Bloomsburg a 10-0 cushion with a single to first that brought home, Ray. DelPierre and Gemberling pulled off a double steal, with Gemberling coming home to give Bloomsburg an 11-0 lead.
Â
After a passed ball gave DelPierre third, Barnes extended the lead to 12-0 with a single to right to bring home DelPierre.
Â
Carly Setting led off the bottom of the third with a double down the right-field line for the Lightning, but Thomas threw her out trying to steal to third for the first out in the inning. Nicole Makin singled to center to put another runner on, but starting pitcher
Savannah Doney (Trout Run, Pa./North Penn-Liberty) continued to work out of trouble and got a pair of pop-ups to get out of the inning without damage.
Â
The Huskies went scoreless in the top of the fourth, and Goldey Beacom got one run back thanks to a sacrifice fly, but Doney got Makin to ground out to end the frame and limit the scoring.
Â
Doney got the run back in the top of the fifth as she singled to third, and Gemberling came home to score and give Bloomsburg a 13-1 lead.
Â
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, the Lightning scored the game's final run with a single to center, but Doney got Bianca Newsom to ground out back to her and end the game. Doney improved to 2-1 on the year with the win in the circle for Bloomsburg.
Â
The Huskies carried the momentum into the second game as Iseminger got the Huskies on the board quickly with a two-run home run with Ray on to give Bloomsburg a 2-0 lead in the first. Freshman
Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) pushed Bloomsburg's lead to 3-0 with a double to left-center in the top of the second to bring home
Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) in the top of the third.
Â
Ray capped the scoring for the weekend as she brought home Starr on a perfectly laid down bunt that allowed Starr to come home in the fifth to give the Huskies a 4-0 lead.
Â
Freshman pitcher
Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) was nearly unhittable through her seven innings as she allowed just three baserunners all game – just two hits and a walk. Sowers struck out seven and faced just two batters over the minimum in her second win of the season for Bloomsburg. Sowers improved to 2-1 in the circle for the year.
Â
Barnes finished the day 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored, while Starr was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, one RBI, and two walks.
Â
Next Saturday, the Huskies return to action when they travel to Bowie, Md. to face Bowie State in a 1:00 pm doubleheader.
