Softball Continues Hot Start to 2022 with Doubleheader Sweep of Bowie State

BOWIE, Md. – The Huskies' offense exploded for 23 runs between their two games as Bloomsburg University swept a non-conference doubleheader against Bowie State Saturday afternoon. The Huskies won the first game 8-2 before completing the sweep with a 15-9 victory in the nightcap.

Bloomsburg jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first game as they plated a pair of runs in the top of the first and three more in the top of the second. Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and Rebecca Rossi (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area) pushed the Huskies' lead to 7-0 with heads up base running as they came home from second and third respectively on a passed ball in the top of the third. Senior Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) gave Bloomsburg an insurance run as she singled home senior Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) to push the advantage to 8-0.

The Bulldogs got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third and bottom of the fourth, but freshman Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) continued her strong start to her first season with the Huskies. Sowers went the full 7.0 innings and allowed those two runs on six hits and three walks. Sowers struck out six.

Bloomsburg out-lasted Bowie State in an offensive marathon in the nightcap as the Huskies put up multiple runs in three innings. Bloomsburg got on the board first with three runs in the top of the second. Senior Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) drove home Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) for the game's first run before freshman Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) scored Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and Annika Gemberling (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln).

Bowie State answered with a three-run home run in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 3-3. The Bloomsburg offense went off for seven runs in the top of the third to take a 10-3 lead. Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) drove home Starr for the seventh run of the inning.

However, the Bulldogs did not go quietly as they scored five in the third and added another run in the fourth to cut the lead to 10-9 midway through the contest.

After Culp hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the Huskies an 11-9 lead, Starr and Ray hit back-to-back home runs to seal the 15-9 win for Bloomsburg. Starr cleared the bases with a three-run drive to left-center while Ray hit a solo shot to center.

Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled) finished off the game with a 1-2-3 sixth and a scoreless seventh to pick up her first win in the circle as a Husky. Eberly pitched 4.0 innings in relief and allowed just one unearned run on one hit and two walks. She struck out seven for BU.

The Huskies have the week to prepare for their Spring Break Trip beginning March 13. Bloomsburg opens the trip to Florida against Eckard College in St. Petersburg on the 13th. The doubleheader is slated to get underway at 12:00 pm.
