BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Graduate student
Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) needed nine points to move into 10
th all-time in scoring, and she hit precisely that in the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team's 55-46 win over Shepherd University, Saturday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 15-8 on the year and 13-4 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play while the Rams dropped to 17-4 and 11-4 in conference action.
Â
With 45 seconds to play, Saxton was fouled by the Rams to stop the clock, and she drained both free throws for her eighth and ninth points in the game. Saxton now has 1,274 career points, tying Catherine Noack (2010-14) for 10
th all-time. Saxton is in striking distance of ninth, 1,313 points, held by Colleen Kegerreis (2005-09). The free throws sealed the win for the Huskies as they forced a pair of contested desperation shots in the final seconds, including a layup by Madi White that sophomore
Emma Gochnauer (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) blocked with 20 seconds to play. Graduate student
Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) grabbed the rebound, and the Huskies ran out the clock on their end for their 10
th-straight win at home this season.
Â
Bloomsburg controlled the play for most of the contest as the Huskies took the lead, 8-7 with 4:50 to play in the thanks to a layup from
Megan Fisher (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot), and never looked back. The Huskies used an 11-4 run to close out the period to lead 19-11 at the end of the first. Bloomsburg outscored the Rams 10-6 in the second, the lowest-scoring quarter by either team and went into the locker room with a 29-17 advantage.
Â
Shepherd bounced back in the third and had its best shooting period of the game as the Rams went 7-for-22 from the floor (31.8%) and outscored Bloomsburg 16-10. The Huskies were held to a 3-for-12 performance from the floor that period and seven turnovers, which Shepherd turned into five points.
Â
The Huskies stingy defense remained composed and held Shepherd to a 4-for-17 fourth quarter. Shepherd did trim the lead to just four, 41-37, with 7:02 to play, but the Huskies went on a 14-6 run to close out the game.
Â
Corridoni led the Huskies with a solid 14-point, 13-rebound double-double for the game, while Gochnauer chipped in seven points. With nine points, six rebounds, and six assists, Saxton finished the day.
Â
As a team, the Huskies shot 46.3% from the floor (19-for-41) and were 5-for-8 (62.5%) from beyond the arc. At the free-throw line, Bloomsburg went 12-for-17 for the game.
Â
The Rams were held to just 46 points, their lowest point total of the season, and an 18-for-68 (26.5%) day from the floor, also a season-low. The Bloomsburg defense limited Shepherd to just one three-pointer (1-for-19 • 5.3%), both season lows for the Rams as well. Shepherd came into the game as the PSAC leader in scoring, averaging 70.8 points per game and three-point shooting (33.5%).
Â
Abby Beeman led the Rams with 22 points off a 9-for-23 day from the floor, while Sydney Clayton chipped in 10 points and had seven steals.
The Rams forced 18 of the Huskies 30 turnovers and scored 22 points off those miscues.
Â
Bloomsburg dominated on the boards, winning the rebounding battle 45-30.
Â
The Huskies return to action when they travel to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, February 9, for a 5:30 pm PSAC contest.
