EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team lost to East Stroudsburg 87-53 in an away Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game Wednesday evening.
The Huskies hung around early on with the Warriors, but a first-half run by East Stroudsburg allowed the home team to seize control of the game before halftime and capture the win.
Ash Kemble (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) led the Huskies in scoring with 15 points and added seven rebounds to go along with two steals. Jake Nelson (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Rustin) was 5-6 from the field, finished with 12 points and had a team-high eight rebounds while Justin Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) had 10 points, four blocked shots and two steals. Justin Rodriguez (Easton, Pa./Morristown-Beard) led the team in assists with six.
The Huskies gained their first lead a minute into the game after Kemble and Nelson converted field goals on the team's first two possessions. Following two lead changes, Bloomsburg would jump out a four-point lead following a dunk by Kemble on a fastbreak. The lead would go on to be the largest for the Huskies as the Warriors responded from the momentous play with a big scoring outburst to take control of the game. Following the dunk, East Stroudsburg outscored Bloomsburg 38-12 over the remaining 14 minutes of play to take a 46-24 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Huskies were able to cut into the lead early on after Anderson knocked down a free throw to make it a 19-point game three minutes in, but the Warriors stretched its lead to 21 two possessions later and steadily added to their advantage for the remainder of the game.
The Huskies did shoot the ball well in the first half as the team was 10-20 (50%) on field-goal attempts, but the shooting percentage dropped in the second half when the squad went 11-37 (29.73%) from the field to finish the game 21-57 (36.8%). Twenty-eight of Bloomsburg's 53 points came in the paint and nine came from the free-throw line. The team was 2-13 from three-point range.
East Stroudsburg scored 62 points in the paint, had 30 points off turnovers and received a big boost from the bench as 49 points were scored by bench players. The Warriors also narrowly won the rebounding category, edging the Huskies 42-38 in total rebounds.
Bloomsburg (4-16, 3-13 PSAC) will play its next contest on Saturday at West Chester. The game is scheduled to tip off at 3:00 PM.
