Baseball Falls To Ship, 2-0

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team fell to Shippensburg on the road Monday evening by a final tally of 2-0.

The two runs of the game came in the top of the sixth inning when Shippensburg third baseman Justin Darden broke a 0-0 tie on a two-run single.

In all, a solid day by three Bloomsburg pitchers held the Raiders to just two runs on seven hits. Michael Standen (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) allowed just two hits through 5.1 innings pitched to go along with six strikeouts. Kolby Barrow (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) tossed 2.1 innings and did not allow an earned run while Mason Keene (Bear, Del./Appoquinimink) made an appearance that saw him go 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and no hits.

Offensively, the Huskies were paced by Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford), who went 2-4. Five other players recorded one hit apiece to give Bloomsburg a total of seven on the day. The team also tallied four walks to give them 11 baserunners during the nine-inning game.

The Huskies, who were the home team at Shippensburg on Monday due to the game being relocated following a schedule change, had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the sixth inning when Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) led off with a single. However, following a pair of fly outs and a walk, Shippensburg was able to get a strike out to strand Chasanov at third.

Bloomsburg threatened to score again in the seventh when it loaded the bases with one out. The Raiders again pitched out of the jam to hold the Huskies off the scoreboard, this time with a strikeout and fly out to get out of the inning.

The bottom of the eighth saw a similar scenario when Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) was in the batter's box with Christian Labarbera (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) in scoring position at second with two outs. As the tying run at the plate, Viggiano lined out to right field and was robbed of a hit when Shippensburg's right fielder made a diving catch to end the inning. The ninth inning saw Adam Gates (Swedesboro, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) single with one out but the Raiders got a strike out and ground out to end the contest at 2-0.

Bloomsburg goes to 2-1 in PSAC play after topping the Raiders twice on Friday. The Huskies, who are now 9-5 overall, will turn around to host Le Moyne college at Danny Litwhiler Field on Tuesday. The non-conference game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM.
