Baseball Loses Shortened Slugfest To Le Moyne, 16-14

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – In a game that saw plenty of offense by both clubs, the Bloomsburg University baseball team fell to Le Moyne 16-14 at home on Monday.

The game was scheduled for nine innings but was called after the completion of the seventh due to darkness.

Bloomsburg was led offensively by Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) in the high-scoring affair as the redshirt senior was a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Newbert finished the game 3-4 with a homer, triple, two runs batted in, three runs scored and a walk. Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) and Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fifth to join Newbert in the home-run club. Ernst had three hits to go along with one RBI and two runs scored while Chasanov went 2-4 with one RBI and run scored. Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) was 2-3 with a double, three runs scored and two walks. Tyler Wiik (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) had a team-high four RBI and went 2-4 with a double. Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) was 1-3 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored.

In all, the Huskies' offense totaled 14 runs on 15 hits across seven innings of play. Le Moyne had the final rally of the game, however, in the sixth inning to put them on top. The Dolphins finished with 16 total runs on 16 hits.

The scoring got started in the second inning when Le Moyne scored five runs to jump out to an early lead. The Dolphins scored their runs on a two-run homer and a pair of singles. The Huskies answered in the bottom-half of the inning when an RBI double by Gibble was followed up by a two-run single by Adam Gates (Swedesboro, N.J./Gloucester Catholic).

The Dolphins scored a run in the top of the third, but the Huskies again rallied in the bottom-half of the inning, this time with four runs to take a 7-6 lead. Bloomsburg scored on a two-run home run by Newbert and two-run single by Wiik.

The scoring continued in the fourth with Le Moyne putting up a three spot in the top-half of the inning. That was again followed by a four-run inning by the Huskies. This time, the home team scored runs on a bases-loaded walk, wild pitch and two-run double by Wiik.

Now an 11-9 ballgame in favor of the Huskies, Le Moyne was able to even up the score in the fifth by scoring runs on a passed ball and RBI double. The Huskies regained the lead once again in the home-half of the inning following back-to-back homers by Chasanov and Ernst. Newbert then scored on a wild pitch to stretch Bloom's lead to 14-11.

Runs kept coming in the sixth, but just for Le Moyne. Trailing by three, the Dolphins scored five runs on an error, two-run single, walk and hit batter. The rally would go on to be the final lead change of the game as both teams were held scoreless in the seventh.

A total of 10 pitchers were used in the contest between both teams. Jed Boyle got the win for Le Moyne after throwing 2.2 scoreless innings. Jacob Kuperavage (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) was chalked with the loss.

The Huskies turn around for a home contest against Chestnut Hill on Wednesday. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM.
