WINTER PARK, Fla. – A late offensive surge was not enough as the Bloomsburg University softball team's late comeback fell just short, and the Huskies dropped a doubleheader to Rollins College, Monday. Rollins took the first game 4-0 before hanging on for a 6-5 win in the second game.
Â
Down 6-0 heading into the sixth inning, the Huskies found an offensive groove and put up four runs on four hits in the frame.
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) led off the inning with a double to right-center before
Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) singled through the left side to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Kammy Kropinski (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) came out to run for Ray before
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) drew a walk to load the bases.
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) wore a pitch in her at-bat to score the game's first run for Bloomsburg as Kropinski came home.
Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) followed by getting hit to bring home Isemginger and keep the bases loaded. Freshman
Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) plated two runs with one swing of the bat as Culp scored from first and DelPierre came home, though Barnes was thrown out trying to score as well for the inning's first out.
Rebecca Rossi (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area) continued the hit parade as she singled up the middle to put runners back on the corners, but Rollins worked itself out of the jam with a pair of ground out to preserve the 6-4 lead.
Â
Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled) faced the minimum number of batters in the bottom of the sixth as
Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and Ray turned a double play after a lead-off single for Rollins. Eberly got the final out of the inning with a foul out to Little behind the plate.
Â
With two runners on and one out, Barnes moved both runners into scoring position with a ground out to second. Culp followed with a single through the right side to bring home
Jayla Bartholomew (Williamsport, Pa/Williamsport) and made it a one-run game. Rollins got the final out of the inning with a fly ball to center to end the late comeback attempt for the Huskies.
Â
Rollins took the first game 4-0 after scoring a single run in the second and fourth innings and putting up a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
The Huskies loaded the bases in the second though an unlucky ground ball back to the pitcher sandwiched between a pair of strikeouts kept Bloomsburg off the board. The Huskies were held in check for the rest of the game.
Â
Bloomsburg looks to snap its streak to open its spring break trip tomorrow as the Huskies head to Florida Southern University for a 2:00 pm doubleheader.
