WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Bloomsburg University softball team split a pair of neutral site games on Thursday. The Huskies defeated Dominican College 7-1 in their first game of the day before falling to Pace University, 6-0, in the day's finale.
Â
Bloomsburg got off to a quick start against the Chargers in game one as they put up two runs in the top of the first. With the bases loaded and two out,
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) singled to bring around
Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and
Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area).
Â
Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) kept the Chargers from scoring in the bottom of the first with a pair of strikeouts and a line out before Bloomsburg tacked on some insurance runs in the top of the third. With two on and one out,
Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) gave the Huskies a 5-0 lead with her team-leading third home run of the season.
Â
Bloomsburg pushed its lead to 6-0 after Barnes got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth, and Iseminger hit her second home run of the year to increase the lead to 7-0. Sowers kept the Charges off the board until Toni Jo Lopez led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to cut the lead to 7-1. After a scoreless top of the seventh for Bloomsburg, Sowers went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win in the circle.
Â
Pace got out to the early lead against Bloomsburg in the second game of the day as the Setters scored once in the top of the third and again in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead.
Â
The Huskies had a chance to take the early lead with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, but a foul out to third ended the scoring threat. The Setters added four runs on four hits in the top of the sixth to take a 6-0 lead and held on for the 6-0 win.
Â
The Huskies are back in action today, Friday, March 18, as they face Wayne State University and the University of New Haven to close out their spring break trip.
