WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Huskies dropped a close 3-2 contest to Wayne State to open the day before defeating University of New Haven, 3-1, to close out their spring break trip. The Bloomsburg University softball team moved to 8-10 on the year as the Huskies turn their attention to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.
Â
In the opening game of the day, the Huskies struck first against Wayne State as they put up a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Graduate student
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) gave BU the early lead with a two-run home run to the right-center with senior
Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) on the base paths. Wayne State cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame with a one-out RBI double to center.
Â
The Huskies looked to tack on another run in the top of the sixth with two runners on by a short pop up to second-ended the scoring threat. Wayne State answered in the bottom of the sixth with two runners in scoring position and less than two outs, but
Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled) got out of that jam with a strikeout and fly ball to right field.
Â
After a scoreless top of the seventh for BU, Wayne State tied the game on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh and won it with a walk-off bunt single to third for the 3-2 victory.
Â
The Huskies rebounded in the final game of their trip to Florida with a 3-1 win over the University of New Haven.
Â
Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) got the Huskies on the board first with an RBI single in the fourth to bring home
Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area).
Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) followed with a bases-loaded ground out to short, bringing home
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), and
Alexis Wetzler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High School) gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead with a ground out to second that allowed
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) to come home.
Â
UNH cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth with an RBI single, but that would be all of the offense they could muster against
Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area). After giving up a lead-off single in the top of the seventh, Sowers sandwiched a strikeout between a pop-up to second and a line out to left to earn the win in the circle.
Â
The Huskies open their home schedule on Saturday, March 26, when they host IUP at Jan M. Hutchinson Field. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1:00 pm.
