Women's Tennis Picks Up First Win of Spring with Hard-Fought 4-3 Victory at Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W. Va. - The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team grabbed the doubles point and clinched a 4-3 match win at No. 6 singles as the Huskies defeated Fairmont State University for their first win of the spring season. 

With the match tied 3-3, Isabella Sarquis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Metodo) won her opening set 6-4 before out-lasting Trang Hong Nguyen in the final set 7-5 to clinch the team win for Bloomsburg, 4-3. 

"Today's match against Fairmont State was a much better effort," remarked head coach Rebecca Helt. "We played with more confidence. The doubles point turned out to be crucial. It was a very well played team match today!"

Luana Bernardi (Aruja, Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino) and Lexi Quackenbush (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) got the Huskies off on the right foot with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles before Sarquis and Alese Rinker (/) won the first point with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Rea Hagishima (Tokyo, Japan/Meguro Nihon University High School) and Sarah Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) completed the sweep in doubles matches as they won 6-3 at No. 1. 

Fairmont State tied the match at 1-1 as Ainara Pastor Garcia won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and then took a 2-1 lead with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles by Emme McKnight. FSU pushed its lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles but Capoferri kept the Huskies in the match with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles to cut the Fairmont lead to 3-2. Bernardi tied the match at 3-3 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles before Sarquis clinced the team with at No. 6.

The Huskies get back to action this weekend as they host Frostburg State on Saturday at 12:00 pm and Rider Unviersity on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
