SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team fell to Shepherd during the first game of a doubleheader before tying the Rams in Game 2 on Saturday during two away conference matchups.
The Huskies lost the first game 5-0 and tied the second game 9-9 after it was called due to darkness after 10.5 innings of play.
The first game saw the Rams score two runs in the first inning and three in the third inning while the Rams' Chris Chaney limited the Huskies' offense to three hits as he threw a complete game shutout.
Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech),
Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) and
Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) recorded hits for the Huskies.
In the second game, Newbert got the Huskies' offense going in the first inning with a two-run home run to give the team a quick 2-0 lead. Shepherd answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half to tie things up, but Bloomsburg regained the lead in the second after Viggiano hit a solo homer. Shepherd's Daniel Keer then tied things up with a solo homer in the fourth inning and a two-run homer in the fifth by Cole Daugherty put the Rams up 5-3.
Chasanov scored for Bloomsburg in the seventh on a passed ball and a two-run homer by Viggiano in the eighth put the Huskies back on top 6-5. Newbert then hit a two-run blast and
Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) hit a solo shot in the top of the ninth to give the Huskies an 9-5 advantage. The Rams were able to piece together a four-run bottom-half to knot things up 9-9, which is where things stayed through the tenth inning.
Viggiano was 3-5 with three runs batted in and two runs scored while Newbert had four RBI and scored twice. OFier and Jonathon Labarbera each had two-hit days. The Huskies used four different pitchers with
Scott Gilbert (Scranton, Pa./Abington Heights) leading the way with four innings pitched.
Bloomsburg returns to action with an away contest at St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday.
