Baseball Falls To St. Thomas Aquinas On The Road

POMONA, N.Y. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team fell to St. Thomas Aquinas 10-9 during an away non-conference game on Tuesday evening.

The Huskies trailed by three runs before scoring two in the top of the eighth on a Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) home run to make it a one-run game, but the comeback was cut short as Spartans sat down the next four hitters in order to come away with the win.

OFier finished with two hits, four runs batted in and two runs scored. Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) and Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) joined OFier in hitting homers during the game. Chasanov was 2-4 with one RBI and three runs scored while Newbert went 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) scored twice as he reached base on two walks. Bryce Porter (Lincoln University, Pa./Perkiomen) and Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) also drew two walks.

The Huskies fell behind 1-0 after two innings before trading runs with the Spartans in nearly every inning after. Newbert hit a solo home run in the third to tie things up before St. Thomas Aquinas answered with an RBI single in the bottom-half.

In the fifth, Newbert had an RBI single that was followed up with a two-run single by OFier. Porter was then walked with the bases loaded to give the Huskies a four-run inning. However, the Spartans responded with a four-run inning of their own in the bottom-half to regain a one-run advantage.

Bloomsburg slugged back in the sixth with a solo home run by Chasanov, and Gibble scored by reaching home during a double play in another bases-loaded situation. Gibble's run gave the Huskies a 7-6 lead, but the Spartans scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead and two more runs in the seventh extended their advantage to 10-7. OFier hit his two-run HR in the eighth, but the next four hitters did not reach base as St. Thomas Aquinas held on for the one-run win.

The Huskies finished the game with seven total hits while the Spartans scored 10 runs on 11 total hits. A total of 12 pitchers were used throughout the contest. Nate Baranski (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) was given the loss for Bloomsburg and Will Kindl earned the win.

Bloomsburg returns to action on Tuesday with an away game at Adelphi. The contest is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
