Women's Lacrosse Hangs On For a Thrilling 12-11 Win Over Kutztown

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – With 2:44 to play regulation, junior Annie Rollins (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) shot the ball into the top corner of the net to give Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse a 12-11 lead, and the defense hung on as the Huskies out-lasted Kutztown for their fourth-straight win.

The Huskies trailed 11-9, heading into the final quarter before junior Kelsey Clauss (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) cut the lead to one, 11-10 at the 11:59 mark with her third goal of the game. Maya Fulmer (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) won the ensuing draw control for the Huskies, and senior Kelsey Kilgallon (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) cut through the defense for her 17th goal of the season and the game-tying goal with 11:16 to play in regulation. Just 30 seconds later, Kutztown had a chance to re-take the lead, but Lauren Foley (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) stopped Brooke-Lynn Grim's attempt to keep the game tied. Foley made two more saves over the next three minutes of action, including one at 3:43 to set up a clear attempt for Bloomsburg. After a successful clear, Rollins got the ball in her stick and worked around from the back of the cage and through the defense to shoot it into the top corner.

Kutztown called a time out following Rollins' goal and, after winning the next draw, turned the ball over with 2:01 to play. The Golden Bears forced a Husky turnover on the other end of the field for one last scoring attempt. Bloomsburg's defense did not let the Golden Bears set up any offensive play and forced a turnover in the final 13 seconds, and the Huskies hung on for the 12-11 win.

Bloomsburg's offense got off to another hot start in the game and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes of action thanks to a goal from Haley Williams (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley), Abby Kalish (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley), and Kilgallon. The Golden Bears started to find a groove and out-scored Bloomsburg 3-2 in the final 8:47 of the first quarter. Sam Graf cut the Huskies' lead to 5-4 with a free position goal just over two minutes into the second, but Maya Fulmer's (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) fifth goal pushed the Bloomsburg lead back to two, 6-4, with 10:56 to play. Graf scored her second of the quarter with 3:41 to play, and the two teams went into halftime with Bloomsburg holding on to a 6-5 lead.

The Golden Bears went on a 3-0 run to open the third quarter and take an 8-6 lead with 11:56 to play in the third. Clauss halted the run with the first of the game to cut the lead back to 8-7. Two straight goals from the Golden Bears pushed their lead to 10-7 before Clauss and Kate Roberts (Lehman, Pa./Lake Lehman) went back-to-back to cut the deficit to 10-9. Shannon Lake gave Kutztown an 11-9 lead with her second of the game before the Huskies out-scored Kutztown 3-0 in the final quarter for the come-from-behind win.

The two teams were even on shots 28-28, but the Huskies led 24-18 in shots on goal. Bloomsburg won at the draw 14-12.

Foley made seven saves in the win, and Clauss led the team with three goals and an assist.

The Huskies hit the road for their next two games as they travel to Shippensburg on Tuesday for a 4:00 pm contest and down to West Chester on Saturday for a 1:00 pm game.
