OFier, Chasanov Homer Twice As Huskies Rally Past ESU, 10-7

OFier's Two Homers Tie Him For 1st On All-Time List

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Trailing 7-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bloomsburg University baseball team rattled off nine unanswered runs across the next four innings to pull off a dramatic 10-7 victory over East Stroudsburg at home on Monday afternoon.

The nine-run rally was highlighted by a huge seventh inning that saw the Huskies put up four runs and take their first lead of the contest, which they held on to for the remainder of the game. Down 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) tied things up with one swing of the bat as he belted a three-run homer over the left-field fence. Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) hit a double down the left-field line two at-bats later and following an intentional walk to Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech), Bryce Porter (Lincoln University, Pa./Perkiomen) was called on to pinch hit and he knocked in Ernst for the go-ahead run with a clutch single down the right-field line.

In the bottom of the eighth, Bloomsburg added two more runs on a pair of solo home runs. Jonathan Labarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) delivered the first homer of the inning and OFier gave the Huskies a 10-7 lead with his second home run of the day. OFier's second homer of the game gives him a total of 37 career home runs, which ties him with Matt Karchner (1986-89) for first place on the all-time list. Fellow senior Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) is close behind with 35 career home runs.

In the top of the ninth, Quinn Holt (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) picked up where he left off as he retired the first two hitters on fly balls to left field. Following a pair of walks by Holt, Matt Vernieri (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) entered the game with the tying run at the plate and the sophomore struck out Jack Rothenhauser – who homered twice in the contest for ESU – to close out the game. Holt struck out four hitters and allowed just one hit as he threw 3.2 scoreless innings in relief to pick up his second win of the season. Matt Vernieri (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) picked up his third save of the season.

Offensively, Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) had a big, somewhat overshadowed day as he kept the Huskies within striking distance with two solo home runs after the home team fell behind early on. The center fielder went deep in the second inning and following a two-run homer by Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) in the fifth, Chasanov hit another HR in the sixth to make it a 7-4 ballgame. OFier's two homers and Labarbera's solo shot in the eighth gave Bloomsburg a total of six home runs on the day as the Huskies scored nine of their 10 runs from the long ball. Porter's go-ahead RBI single was the only run not to come from a homer.

With their six home runs, the Huskies now have a total of 46 on the year, which leads the entire Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

OFier finished the game 2-for-5 with four runs batted in and two runs scored. Chasanov was 3-for-3 with two homers, a double, two runs scored and a walk. Gibble was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI while Porter was 1-for-1 with his RBI single. Labarbera had two hits, one RBI and two runs scored and he was joined by Ernst with a two-hit day as the junior went 2-for-4. Adam Gates (Swedesboro, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) was also 1-for-1 as he pinch hit in the bottom of the sixth and delivered a single in his only at-bat of the contest.

The Huskies (18-12-1, 10-4-1 PSAC) will have a quick turnaround as they are scheduled to host Adelphi (16-7-1, 7-3 NE10) on Tuesday for a non-conference game. The nine-inning game is part of "Strikeout Sexual Assault Day" and the contest is scheduled to start at 3:30 PM.
