OFier's Go-Ahead HR Sets New Record, Sparks Huskies To 11-3 Win Over Adelphi

Senior Infielder Becomes All-Time Leader With 38th Career HR

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – For the second day in a row, Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) delivered a clutch and historic home run that sparked the Bloomsburg University baseball team to a home victory at Danny Litwhiler Field.

This time, OFier hit a go-ahead solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to become the program's all-time leader in career homers while also sparking the Huskies to an eight-run inning that led to an 11-3 victory over Adelphi University on Tuesday. The solo blast was OFier's 38th career home run, which surpassed Matt Karchner (1986-89) for the top spot in program history.

OFier's milestone comes one day after the infielder went deep twice against East Stroudsburg to tie Karchner's all-time mark. The 6-0, 195-pounder's first homer against ESU was a three-run blast that tied the game, which the Huskies went on to win 10-7.

OFier's homer against Adelphi was the first of three long balls hit by Bloomsburg in the seventh inning. Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson), who hit two home runs in the contest, and Jonathan Labarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) both homered over the right-field fence while Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) and Bryce Porter (Lincoln University, Pa./Perkiomen) both knocked in a run during the team's eight-run inning.

Gibble finished the day 2-for-5 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Labarbera also knocked in three runs with his homer in the seventh and Chasanov finished the day 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) also had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one run scored and a pair of walks.

Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton), who is third all-time on the team's career home run list with 35, scored twice and was walked once. Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) and Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) added singles to give the Huskies a total of 12 hits in the contest.

Adelphi, which topped the Huskies 12-4 earlier this season, outhit Bloomsburg on Tuesday as the team collected a total of 13 hits. However, some solid outings and timely putouts drawn by the Huskies' pitching staff put a halt to several scoring opportunities for the Panthers, who left a total of 15 runners on base in the nine-inning game.

Five Bloomsburg pitchers went into the team's winning effort and Duke Stafursky (Archbald, Pa./Valley View), who threw two scoreless innings in relief, notched his first collegiate win in the process. Brandon Walters (York, Pa./Central York) started the game and struck out six hitters while allowing just one earned run through four innings of play. Casey Fitzsimmons (Burlington, N.J./Holy Cross) and Kelly Holdren (Millville, Pa./Millville Area) threw the fifth and sixth innings and Zach Steen (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) struck out the side in the top of the ninth to close out the game in a non-save situation.

With the victory, the Huskies are now riding a three-game winning streak and have won eight of their last 11 contests. The team's four home runs on Tuesday give the squad a total of 50 on the season, which leads the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Newbert leads the conference with 12 long balls and OFier is now second with 10 on the season. The team has 11 different players who have recorded at least one home run this year.

Bloomsburg (19-12-1, 10-4-1 PSAC) climbed to No. 2 in the PSAC East standings following Monday's conference win over ESU and the Huskies will be looking to keep up the momentum on Thursday when they travel to Mars Hill (15-24, 9-11 SAC) for a three-game road trip. Bloomsburg will play the Lions in a single game on Thursday before they play a doubleheader on Friday.
