Huskies Win 4th Straight, Hold On For 11-10 Victory Over Mars Hill

OFier, Newbert Homer Twice During 3-Inning Rally

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team picked up its fourth consecutive win after holding on for an 11-10 victory over Mars Hill University on Thursday.

The Huskies (20-12-1, 10-4-1 PSAC) belted five home runs in three innings as the team scored all 11 runs across the third, fourth and fifth innings to jump out to a comfortable 11-4 lead. Mars Hill (16-25, 9-11 SAC) scored two runs in the sixth and rallied in four more in the bottom of ninth to make it a one-run game, but Bloomsburg pitcher Matt Vernieri (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) drew a ground out to end the game with the tying run at second base.

Offensively, Bloomsburg was led once again by two of its top home-run hitters in program history in Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) and Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton). Both players homered twice in the contest and have been putting up record-breaking numbers throughout the season. OFier became the all-time leader in career home runs on Tuesday against Adelphi and Newbert is now two homers away from surpassing Matt Karchner (1986-89) for the No. 2 spot. In addition, Newbert is now two home runs away from tying Ryan Kirman's single-season record of 16 homers in a season that was set in 2016. Newbert leads the conference with 14 home runs this season and OFier is second with 12.

Bloomsburg's Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) also homered during the team's three-inning rally and the center fielder added a pair of triples in the contest. Chasanov finished the game 3-for-6 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Chasanov now has a total of three home runs in the last three games. OFier and Newbert were both 4-for-6 with four RBI apiece and three other Huskies had extra-base hits. Bryce Porter (Lincoln University, Pa./Perkiomen) and Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) both doubled and Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) had a triple.

On the mound, Michael Standen (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) picked up his first win of the season after allowing one run and three hits in three innings. Matt Vernieri (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) picked up his fourth save of the season after making the game-winning run ground out to end the game.

The 11 runs put up by the Huskies marks the third straight game in which the team has put up at least 10 runs. In the last three games combined, Bloomsburg has put up 32 runs on 34 hits and homered 15 times.

With the win, the two-time defending PSAC Champions have now won nine of their last 12 games and the team is clicking a month before the PSAC Tournament is scheduled to begin. The Huskies currently sit in the No. 2 spot of the PSAC East with a conference record of 10-4-1. Millersville (26-8, 10-2 PSAC) is in first place.

The Huskies will be looking to pick up their fifth and sixth straight wins tomorrow as the team takes on Mars Hill in a doubleheader. The non-conference games are scheduled to begin with Game 1 at 11:00 AM.
