Huskies Take Series After Splitting Doubleheader With Mars Hill

Newbert Ties Single-Season HR Record

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team split a doubleheader with Mars Hill University on Friday afternoon. The two games wrapped up the three-game road series, which saw the Huskies win two of the three contests.

Bloomsburg (21-13-1, 10-4-1 PSAC) fell to the Panthers (17-26, 9-11 SAC) by a final of 4-2 before the Huskies won the second game, 7-4.

Game 2 was highlighted by the Huskies' ability to hit the long ball once again as back-to-back home runs by Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) and Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) made the score 3-0 heading into the bottom of the first inning. Following 2.5 scoreless innings of play, Bloomsburg added another run in the top of the fourth on a Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) RBI single.

However, Mars Hill cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run triple hit by Jordan Lathe. The Huskies wasted no time responding as the team hit a pair of homers in the next half-inning. OFier led things off with a solo homer to center field and a two-run homer by freshman Adam Gates (Swedesboro, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) stretched the team's lead to 7-2.

The Panthers hit solo home runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, but the team was unable to get the game-tying run aboard as Duke Stafursky (Archbald, Pa./Valley View) retired the next three batters following Mars Hill's final home run. Stafursky recorded two of the three outs with strikeouts to end the game. Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) recorded his eighth win of the season, which leads the conference and is tied for the third most in a single season in program history. Chad Arnold set the single-season record in 1995 with 12 wins. Marshman was relieved in the sixth by Matt Vernieri (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat), who allowed just two hits in two innings and struck out two.

At the plate, OFier led the way with his two home-run game as the school's all-time career home run leader finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Five more Husky hitters recorded an extra-base hit in the contest as Gibble, Jonathan Labarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) all added doubles. Newbert and Gates also doubled to go along with their aforementioned home runs. Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) also had a two-hit day, going 2-for-4.

In Game 1, Mars Hill was the team to jump out to an early lead through one inning of play as the home team scored one run in the bottom-half of the opening inning to take the advantage. The game played out to be a pitching duel over the next five innings of play as both teams were held scoreless until the sixth inning.

In the sixth, Bloomsburg's Gibble tied things up at 1-1 with one swing of the bat as the sophomore hit a solo home run to center field. Mars Hill, however, had a big answer in the bottom-half of the inning. In a bases-loaded situation, Zach Weaver hit a bases-clearing triple to give the Panthers a three-run lead. Newbert hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh, but the Huskies did not get a base runner on to bring the tying run to the plate. A strikeout, ground out and fly out ended the game.

Kolby Barrow (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) pitched all six innings for the Huskies and allowed just five hits, four earned runs, and two walks while striking out seven. On the other side, three different pitchers were used by Mars Hill to hold Bloomsburg to just three hits in the game, two of which went for solo home runs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
With Newbert's two home runs on Friday, he tied Ryan Kirman's single-season record of 16 home runs that was set in 2016. Newbert also surpassed Matt Karchner for the No. 2 spot for most career home runs in program history. Newbert now has 39 for his career and is three behind OFier, who homered twice in Game 2 to stretch his record-setting number to 42.

OFier recorded three runs batted in the second game and is now three more away from tying Karchner's all-time record of 165 career RBI. Newbert ranks fourth on that list with 154.

Marshman is now three wins away from tying J.P Thomas (1988-91) for the most career wins in program history. Thomas holds the record with 21 career victories. Marshman is also four wins away from tying the single-season record of 12 wins. With his two strikeouts on Friday, Marshman is now tied for seventh place on the single-season strikeout record with 62 on the year.

The doubleheader wraps up a solid five-game week for the Huskies as the team won four of the games and put up some remarkable offensive numbers. In the five games this week, the team homered a total of 21 times and scored 41 runs on 50 hits.

The loss in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader did snap a four-game winning streak, but the win in Game 2 extends the Huskies' hot streak, which includes winning 10 of their last 14 games.

UP NEXT
The Huskies are off until next Friday, which is when the team will play a home-and-away series with Mansfield (15-18, 7-7 PSAC). Bloomsburg travels to Mansfield for a single game on Friday, April 22, before they host Mansfield on that Saturday for a doubleheader.
