Softball Splits PSAC Doubleheader with West Chester

BLOOMSBURG, Pa - The Bloomsburg University softball team split a doubleheader against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent West Chester University Friday afternoon. The Huskies grabbed the first win, 4-2, before the Golden Rams claimed the second game, 8-5. With the split, the Huskies moved to an overall record of 16-14 and 2-4 in conference action, while the Rams sit at an even 17-17 overall with a 4-4 PSAC record.

Alexis Wetzler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High School) slammed her first home run of the season over left field and drove Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) home for the first two runs of the first game for the early 2-0 lead in the second inning. The Rams responded with a run in the bottom of the third to cut the Huskies' lead to 2-1 after three innings.

After a scoreless fourth for Bloomsburg, West Chester tied the game as Mary Picozza singled through right field to send her teammate, Audrey Kochanowicz, home for the 2-2 tie.

The Huskies came back swinging as Barnes singled to left field and took second on an error as Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) scored to give the Huskies a 4-2 lead. West Chester limited the damage as they got a strikeout with two runners in scoring position to end the fifth.

For the rest of the game, the Rams were held scoreless by freshman pitcher Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) and allowed just one hit in the final two innings. Sowers continues to dominate for the Huskies as she collected her ninth win of the season to move to 9-5 in the circle for the Huskies.

DelPierre led the Huskies with a pair of hits in the first game. Wetzler and DelPierre drove in a couple of runs while Iseminger, DelPierre, Barnes, and Wetzler all scored once.

The Huskies wasted no time as Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) stepped up to the plate and found a perfect hole out to the center field for the double. Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) singled to right field and advanced to second off the throw, placing Lenner to third. Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) safely sent Lenner home and moved Ray to third as she singled down the left-field line. The momentum continued as Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) collected her sixth RBI as she sent Ray home to score for the early 2-0 lead over the Rams.

The Rams came back swinging after game one as they collected four runs in the bottom of the first. With bases loaded, West Chester's Haleigh Karcher singled to center field to send Katelyn Rittenbaugh home for the Rams' first run of the game. They collected two more runs as freshman pitcher Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled) could not find the strike zone and walked the following three runners home to score.

In the top of the third, DelPierre and Iseminger were on second and third just before Barnes hit a ground ball through second base that advanced Iseminger home to narrow the gap, 5-3. Bloomsburg could not score, and the Rams pushed the lead further as they picked up one run in the bottom of the third.

Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) got into the action as she singled through to left field to get herself on first base. Ray grounded out to first base but could advance Starr to second before Iseminger singled out to center field, and Starr sprinted home for the Huskies' fourth run of the game.

With hopes of closing in on the Rams, Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) scored a run in the top of the sixth off a throwing error by center fielder but was unable to close the gap more as the Rams claimed two more runs in the sixth inning, stretching their lead, 8-5 and West Chester pitcher, Mary Picozzi was able to hold off the Huskies in the top of the 7th for the win.

With the loss, Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled) drops to an even 5-5 record while her opponent, Picozzi, advances to 8-6 for the season.

Iseminger went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run, while Lenner finished the second game 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The Huskies get back on the road Saturday, April 16, for a doubleheader conference game against Kutztown University, slated to begin at 11:00 am.
