Softball Splits Away Doubleheader With Division Leader Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – A rally in the first game of a conference doubleheader allowed the Bloomsburg University softball team to split a pair of games with Kutztown University on Saturday afternoon.

A four-run seventh inning lifted the Huskies (17-15, 3-5 PSAC) to a 5-1 win over the Golden Bears (27-11, 6-2 PSAC) in Game 1. Kutztown, which currently sits in first place of the PSAC East, then held off Bloomsburg for a 3-2 victory despite being outhit in the second game.

Scoring in the first game got started in the third inning when Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) knocked in Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) on an RBI double to give the Huskies the first lead of the game. The Golden Bears then tied things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth when they scored a run on an error. Following two scoreless innings, the Huskies regained their lead in the top of the seventh by scoring four runs on three clutch hits.

The seventh inning began with a lead-off single by Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy). The sophomore then advanced to second after Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) put down a sacrifice bunt in the next at-bat. Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) pushed the go-ahead run to third with a single in the team's next plate appearance, and that was followed up by an RBI single by Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead. DelPierre reached on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat, and a two-out RBI double by Barnes stretched the team's lead to two and kept the inning alive. Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) then added two more insurance runs as she knocked in DelPierre and Barnes on a two-run single.

In the bottom of the seventh, Kutztown got two baserunners on board and threatened to bring the game-tying run to the plate, but Bloomsburg pitcher Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) was able to draw a pop fly to left field to end the game. Sowers pitched all seven innings for Bloomsburg to pick up her 10th win of the season. The freshman allowed just one unearned run on four hits while striking out four.

Offensively, Bloomsburg collected 11 total hits from six different players, five of which had two-hit games. Barnes and Culp led the way by both going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. DelPierre and Lenner were also 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while Ray was 2-for-3 with one run scored and a walk. Iseminger's clutch single that broke the 1-1 tie in the seventh was the squad's other hit of the contest.

The second game saw another 1-1 game going into the fifth inning, but this time it was Kutztown breaking the tie and taking a victory. The Golden Bears scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of doubles to take a 3-1 lead. In the top of the sixth, Bloomsburg cut the lead in half when Paige Thomas (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) hit a sacrifice fly that scored Savannah Doney (Trout Run, Pa./North Penn-Liberty) from third. Then in the seventh, DelPierre reached base on a single and advanced into scoring position on a groundout. However, Culp hit a fly ball to center field that was caught to end the game.

Despite the loss in Game 2, the Huskies outhit the Golden Bears 11-5. Seven different players recorded a hit and DelPierre led the way with a 3-for-4 game. Ray and Alexis Wetzler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High School) both had two hits and four more players had one hit. Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled) was given the loss but the freshman left-hander struck out five hitters and allowed just three runs in five innings against the first-place Golden Bears.

The win in the first game gives Bloomsburg a conference record of 3-5, which is currently seventh in place in a division that has seven teams with an overall record that is .500 or better. The Huskies still have 12 more games in April and a chance to jump in the standings.

Bloomsburg will begin that 12-game stretch on Tuesday with a home doubleheader against Seton Hill (27-8, 4-4 PSAC West). The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 PM.
