Softball Sweeps Mounties in Offensive Explosion on Friday

MANSFIELD, Pa - The Bloomsburg University softball team used an offensive explosion to sweep Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East opponent Mansfield University on Friday afternoon at the Helen Lutes Field in Mansfield, Pa. The Huskies took the first game 18-2 in six innings before securing the win in game two, 11-2 in just five innings.

A 10-run sixth inning pushed the Huskies to an 18-2 win over the Mountaineers as the run-rule forced the game an inning early. The final run of the game came off senior Erin DelPierre's (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) bat as she reached first base off an error by Mansfield's first baseman and senior Rebecca Rossi (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area) was able to run home to give the Huskies an 18-2 lead. The 18 runs were the most scored in a game by the Huskies since the 2019 season.

Mansfield had the early lead in game one as a ground ball with bases loaded pushed Mansfield's Lacey O'Donnell home for the first run of the game. The Mountaineers picked up one more run before the Huskies stepped up to the plate in the top of the second and freshman Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) sent a sacrifice fly out to right field for DelPierre to come home for the first run for the Huskies. Mansfield pitcher Danielle Goff walked Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) just before Alexis Wetzler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High School) doubled to left field and Little was able to make it home to tie the game, 2-2.

Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) held off the Mountaineers in the bottom of the second and the Huskies had another shot at the plate. Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) got herself on second base as she cracked the ball out to left field for a double. Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) secured her position on first base off an error by Mansfield's second baseman and Starr made it home to take the lead, 3-2. After a pair of fielder's choices put Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and DelPierre on second and third, Culp sent one out to center field and advanced to second base as DelPierre and Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) scored for the 5-2 lead. Culp collected two more RBI for her 21st of her career. Sowers continued to hold off Mansfield with no hits in the third inning.

The Huskies collected four hits and three more runs in the top of the fourth, just two shy of ending the game in five innings. With bases loaded, Ray reached first on a fielder's choice and collected two RBI as sophomore Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and Wetzler rounded home. With two outs, DelPierre singled up the middle and advanced Ray to second just before Barnes doubled down the left field line and Ray found home plate for the 8-2 lead. Mansfield pitcher Morgan Mesaris stepped in and was able to get the third out as well as hold off the Huskies in the top of the fifth to send the game into the sixth inning.

The Huskies came out swinging as they collected 10 runs in one inning. Ray sent the ball high over right center field for her eighth home run of the season and collected two more RBI as Starr was able to round home with her teammate. Barnes and DelPierre each drove in a run before Paige Thomas (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) sent a home run over right field that also brought Barnes home for a 14-2 lead. Pinch hitter Lindsey Reinoehl collected an RBI as she grounded out to third base for pinch hitter Jayla Bartholomew (Williamsport, Pa/Williamsport) to score. Starr scored another run off of Rossi's double to left field and who was then pushed home by DelPierre for the final run of the game. Sowers held off the Mounties for one more inning with no hits.

Starr led the Huskies going 5-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Ray and Thomas both homered and Ray went 1-for-4 with two runs and four RBI. DelPierre was also a major contributor, going 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI while Culp drove in three runs.

Sowers picked up her 11th win in the circle going 5.2 innings allowing just two earned runs on two hits and three walks. Sowers struck out 10 batters.

The Huskies kept the momentum going as they dominated game two in just five innings with a final score, 11-2. DelPierre sent the ball high to the sky as she scored Huskies final run of the game off her first home run of the season in the top of the fifth. Mansfield had hopes to stay alive as they scored their two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Huskies' freshman pitcher Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled) was able to hold off the Mountaineers by allowing just two runs and collected her sixth win of the season.

Huskies had an early 2-0 lead as DelPierre reached third base off an error by Mountaineer's left fielder that pushed Iseminger and Lenner home to score. The game stayed stagnant until the top of the third where the Huskies advanced to a 5-0 lead after Ray, DelPierre and Iseminger all found home plate. DelPierre collected one RBI and Little picked up two.

The Huskies collected one more run in the top of the fourth after DelPierre continued to dominate the plate as she reached first base off a fielder's choice and collected another RBI as Starr ran home for a six-run lead.

With hopes of closing out the game in just five innings, the Huskies picked up five more runs to secure the game in the top of the fifth. Ray singled out to center field with Starr and Lenner in perfect scoring position to secure the 8-0 lead. The Huskies had an exciting ending to their game as Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) stepped up to the plate and grabbed her third home run of the season and sent Ray home to score just before DelPierre homered for the Huskies' final run of the game.

The Mountaineers kept the Huskies from the sweep as they were able to get two runs off Eberly in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough to keep the game going and the Huskies took Game 2 with a final score of 11-2.

Lenner finished the second game 2-fo-4 with two runs while DelPierre went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Ray, Iseminger, and Little all drove in a pair of runs as well.

Eberly grabbed the win by only allowing two runs, five hits and five walks and advanced to a 6-6 record. Eberly struck out nine in the complete-game win. Her opponent Alexis Easling dropped to an overall record, 2-8.

With the win the Huskies advance to an overall record of 19-15 and are 5-5 in conference and the Mountaineers drop to 5-19 overall and 1-11 in conference.

Help celebrate the seniors as the Huskies host Lock Haven University tomorrow for their Senior Day doubleheader with a scheduled start time of 1:00 PM.
