Marshman Strikes Out 11, Huskies Split Doubleheader With ESU

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team split a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) games with East Stroudsburg during a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Huskies (17-12-1, 9-4-1 PSAC) won the second game 3-2 after the Warriors (24-9, 6-5 PSAC) won the first game 11-1.

In Game 2, Bloomsburg's Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) highlighted the win with his performance on the mound. The redshirt junior struck out 11 hitters and allowed just one earned run on seven hits through 7.1 innings. Marshman is now 7-1 on the season and his seven wins are the most of any pitcher in the PSAC. Marshman's solid performance on the mound was backed by Matt Vernieri (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat), who threw 1.2 scoreless innings in relief to pick up a save.

The Huskies took their first lead of the second game in the top of the first inning when Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) knocked in Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) on a pop fly. Following three scoreless innings, the Warriors tied the game when Brock Kauffman scored on a throwing error. Bloomsburg then regained the lead in the sixth when ESU committed a throwing error that allowed Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) to score and give the Huskies a one-run advantage. The Huskies then added an insurance run in the eighth on a Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) RBI double to make it 3-1. The Warriors cut into the lead in the bottom-half when CJ Peechatka had an RBI single during a seven-pitch at-bat, but that would be the final run of the game as the Huskies held on to win, 3-2.

Burcin was 2-for-4 with a double and scored two of Bloomsburg's three runs. Metzger and Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) also recorded doubles as three of the Huskies' five hits went for extra bases. Ernst was the fourth Bloomsburg player to record a hit in the game. ESU's Tommy Reisinger allowed just two hits through 5.2 innings, but he was charged with his second loss of the season.

The first game saw East Stroudsburg jump out to an early lead after the home team put up five runs in the first inning to lead them to an 11-1 win. The Warriors had their five-run inning thanks to a two-run single by Jack Rothenhausler and three-run homer by Tommy Dunleavy. ESU scored a run in the second and fourth before adding four more in the sixth. The Huskies recorded their run in the seventh inning when Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) stole second and Ernst scored on the throw.

Ernst was 1-for-3 with a double and Chasanov went 1-for-2 with a single and a walk. Metzger was also 1-for-3 as East Stroudsburg's Chase Nowak threw all seven innings and allowed just three hits to pick up the win. Nowak has the third-lowest ERA in the PSAC with a mark of 1.61, which is behind Marshman, who has the conference's lowest ERA at 1.38.

The Huskies and Warriors will play the rubber match on Sunday at Bloomsburg. The game, which was postponed from Friday due to rain, is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM at Danny Litwhiler Field.
