QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Huskies were firing on all cylinders as they extended their winning streak to seven with a 9-3 win over No. 2 Seton Hill University in their first game of the 2022 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament Wednesday afternoon.
Â
Currently ranked fourth in the Atlantic Region and the No. 3 seed in the tournament, the Huskies, embraced the underdog mentality as they were facing the No. 2 seed and the No. 2 team in the region, Seton Hill.
Â
Freshman
Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) gave Bloomsburg a gutsy performance in the circle as she tossed her 18
th complete game and improved to 17-6 on the season. She allowed just three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out nine, including a strikeout looking to end the game.
Â
Alexis Wetzler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High School) led the Huskies at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI, including a two-run home run. Freshman
Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) sparked the Huskies' offense with a grand slam in the top of the third with two outs and finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk, run scored, and four RBI.
Â
The Huskies wasted no time getting the scoring going as they scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore
Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) used her speed to reach on a throwing error by the SHU pitcher and took second thanks to an overthrow. Senior
Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) put runners on the corners with a single through the left side. After the Griffins got an out,
Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) laid down a stellar bunt down the first base line that allowed Starr to go first to third and Lenner to score the game's first run.
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) brought Starr home on a double to left to give BU a 2-0 lead.
Â
Seton Hill answered in the bottom of the inning thanks to a pair of walks and a Brooke Cleland home run to take a 3-2 lead. Those three runs proved to be the only runs the Griffins could muster against Sowers.
Â
After a scoreless second inning for both teams, the Huskies pulled away with four runs in the third. After loading the bases with no outs thanks to a pair of singles and a walk to DelPierre, two straight fielder's choices kept the Huskies off the scoreboard, and the Griffins were headed to getting out of the jam. That's until Little stepped to the plate. Little worked a 2-2 count after fouling off several pitches before she found one she liked. She got ahold of a pitch up in the zone and sent it flying over the left-field fence to clear the bases and give Bloomsburg a 6-3 lead. Seton Hill got out of the inning with a fly out to right, but the damage was done.
Â
The Griffins got a runner on thanks to a walk in the third but a strikeout and pop-up to second kept SHU off the board.
Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth and fifth as Bloomsburg clung to its 6-3 lead. In the top of the sixth, Ray put the game out of reach with one swing of the bat as she homered to deep left-center after Starr led off the inning by reaching thanks to a SHU error.
Â
Seton Hill put together its most formidable scoring threat in the bottom of the sixth as they loaded the bases with two outs. Sowers got two quick outs, a foul out to third, and a strikeout before the Griffins strung together two straight singles. Jenna Osikowicz loaded the bases as she got hit by a pitch, but Sowers rose to the challenge and got Lauren Dellett out swinging to end the inning.
Â
The Huskies tacked on the game's final run in the top of the seventh. Starr flew out to right field with two runners in scoring position, and Wetzler came home for the 9-3 Huskies' lead.
Â
Sowers kicked off the bottom of the seventh with a strikeout of Cleland before she closed out the game catching Grace Paredes watching the third strike to keep the Huskies in the winner's bracket of the PSAC Tournament.
Â
The Huskies will play again on Thursday against the winning of the No. 1 Kutztown/No. 5 East Stroudsburg game happening Wednesday evening. Bloomsburg swept ESU in a doubleheader at BU during the regular season and split with the Golden Bears in Kutztown.
