Volleyball Takes Down Millersville in Five Sets

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University volleyball team picked up their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East win of the season as the Huskies rallied for a 3-2 win over Millersville University Friday night. Bloomsburg improved to 3-11 on the year and 1-1 in conference play, while the Marauders dropped to 8-7 for the season and 0-2 in the PSAC East.

The Huskies took the first set 25-21 before Millersville came back for a 25-17 win in the second. Bloomsburg won 25-23 in the third, and the Marauders evened the match with a 25-13 win in the fourth set. The Huskies closed out a match win with a 15-11 win in the fifth set.

As a team, the Huskies hit .178 in the match behind 56 kills and 21 errors on 197 attempts, while Millersville hit .191 with 59 kills and 21 errors on 199 attempts.

The Huskies had their most decisive set in the day's final game as they hit .345 in the fifth set behind 10 kills on 29 attempts and no errors. They opened the match with a .256 hitting percentage in the first set with 14 kills and four errors on 39 attempts.

Graduate student Sydney Buell (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) led the way for the Huskies with 17 kills. Junior Liz Bopp (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) had 12 kills, a team-best two aces, and four blocks, while freshman Emma Antigua (Kimball, Minn./Kimball) had 12 kills and four blocks.

Junior Aydan Espinal (Rock Hill, S.C./Rock Hill) finished the day with 45 assists, and Hannah Robson (Charlotte, N.C./Arborbrook) had a career-best 40 digs. Her previous career-high was 26 against Malone earlier in the season.

In the fifth and deciding set, the Huskies jumped out to an early 8-5 lead behind Bopp's serving. After Millersville got the point back, senior Shayna Warfel's (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) kill and Antigua's block pushed the Bloomsburg lead to four, 10-6. The Huskies and Marauders traded the following four points as Bloomsburg led 12-8 before Millersville made it a two-point set, 12-10, with two straight points.

A Millersville service error combined with a block by Antigua and Bopp set up the first match point for Bloomsburg, 14-10. The Marauders warded off the first match point with a kill before Bopp ended the match with a kill of her own to give the Huskies and 15-11 fifth-set win.

The Huskies return to action tomorrow as they head to West Chester University for a PSAC East match-up with the Golden Rams at 2:00 pm.
