BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team shut out its fifth straight opponent as the team beat Shippensburg 3-0 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East contest Saturday night at Steph Pettit Stadium.
In a dominating performance that saw No. 16 Bloomsburg (8-1, 6-1 PSAC East) outshoot the Red Raiders (2-4-2, 2-3-2 PSAC East) by a final tally of 16-1, it would be two first-half goals and a penalty kick in the second half that would propel the Huskies to the shutout victory.
Nicole Varano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel) gave the Huskies an early lead when she scored her sixth goal of the season less than three minutes into the contest. Varano scored from a shot she sent towards the far post and past the Shippensburg goalkeeper from the right side of the box. Her goal was set up by
Lauren Bull (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) and
Erin Ranegan (Wilmington, Del./Conrad School of Science), who both received assists on the play.
Nearly 33 minutes later,
Brooke Foster (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) was able to extend Bloomsburg's lead to 2-0 prior to halftime when she scored a goal by creating her own scoring opportunity. The sophomore scored her first goal of the season by splitting a pair of Shippensburg defenders and sending a shot towards the far post from the left side of the box and into the back of the net.
In the second half,
Molly Groff (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) gave the Huskies their third score of the game when she converted on a penalty kick with under 15 minutes to play. The goal was Groff's first of the season, and the score was set up after a Huskies player was fouled in the box.
One score would've been enough for the Huskies to come out victorious as their dominating performance led to the Red Raiders getting just one shot off in the contest. Shippensburg's shot came with under four minutes to play and after Bloomsburg created a three-score lead.
Eight different players recorded a shot on goal for the Huskies and 10 different players got a shot off during the contest. Bloomsburg also took eight corner kicks during the game.
The shutout win gives Bloomsburg seven on the season as they have now hit the halfway point of the 2022 regular season with their ninth game of the year.
The Huskies will look to keep up their winning streak on Wednesday when they host East Stroudsburg (5-2-2, 3-2-2). The contest is scheduled to kick off at 5:00 PM at Steph Pettit Stadium. The game is the first of a doubleheader with the men's team.
