BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – In a game that saw a total of seven goals, 33 shots and three lead changes, the Bloomsburg University men's soccer team was able to come from behind and beat Shippensburg 4-3 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest Wednesday night at Steph Pettit Stadium.
The Huskies (7-2-1, 3-1-1 PSAC East) trailed the Red Raiders (2-4-2, 0-4-2 PSAC East) by one score in the second half until
Stephen Hollis (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) tied the game up at 3-3 when he scored his first goal of the year on a free kick. Hollis sent the ball high into the box from about 35 yards out and the ball found the back of the net after a leaping Shippensburg's goalkeeper was unable to get a hand on the ball.
The goal by Hollis only knotted the game up momentarily as his score was quickly followed up by another goal. Three minutes after the score by Hollis, the Huskies took the final lead of the game when
Patrick Walsh (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) scored his scored goal of the contest with 26:03 remaining in the game. Walsh snuck the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal from point-blank range after receiving a pass in front of the net from
Anthony Schlee (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley), who got the ball from a lob pass that was sent into the box by
Braden Alicea (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland).
Walsh's game-winning goal capped off his solid night that saw him score twice. The sophomore scored the first goal of the game 13 minutes into the contest by heading in a cross that was delivered by Hollis towards the far post from the left side of the field on a free kick.
Following Walsh's first goal of the game, Shippensburg's Chase Estes scored his second goal of the season to tie things up at 1-1. The Husky's regained the lead 16 minutes later when Schlee delivered a score on a penalty kick. Shippensburg's Ashton Davies then tied the game at 2-2 before halftime by scoring on his own penalty kick.
In the second half, the Red Raiders took their first lead of the game when Harry Kershaw scored his first goal of the season 12 minutes into the frame. The heroics by Hollis and Walsh then gave Bloomsburg the final advantage in the action-packed game.
Bloomsburg finished the contest outshooting Shippensburg 20-13. The squad also held the edge in corner kicks, 5-1.
A total of 43 fouls were called in the contest between the two teams, and six yellow cards were distributed, all of which were given to the Red Raiders.
The win gives Bloomsburg its third straight victory over a conference opponent and the team climbed to the No. 2 spot in the PSAC East with the win. The Huskies now only trail West Chester (7-2-1, 4-1-1 PSAC East) in the division standings.
Bloomsburg will look to keep up its momentum when it travels Millersville (5-1-4, 2-0-3 PSAC East) on Saturday for a PSAC East contest. The game will kick off at 4:00 PM.
