Field Hockey Upset Bid Falls Just Short; Huskies Fall to #5 Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University field hockey team had an upset on their minds, but the fifth-ranked and undefeated Millersville University Marauders held on for a 4-2 win Friday night. The Huskies dropped to 5-4 on the year, and open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play 0-1 while the Marauders improve to 7-0 and 1-0 in PSAC action.

Just 2:43 in the fourth quarter and trailing 3-1, the Huskies earned a penalty corner and took full advantage. Senior Meghan Longenhagen (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) inserted the ball for BU, and Sam Schaffer (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) got to pass off to sophomore Aydan McFarland (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) who finished with a shot into the back of the game to cut the lead to 3-2 with just under 13 to play.

Less than a minute later, the Marauders answered to extend the lead back to two, 4-2, but the Huskies kept shooting with less than nine to play. McFarland took another shot that went just wide off another penalty corner. With 2:22 to play, the Marauders earned a corner, and Bri Harsh took a shot, but Bella Culp (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) helped her goalie, Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), with a defensive save to keep the score close. The Huskies offense was held without a shot in the final two minutes, and Millersville walked away with the 4-2 win.

Millersville took an early lead with two goals in the first quarter. Both teams were held scoreless in the second as Millersville carried a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Bloomsburg did not waste any time in the third as Bri Doebler (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) collected the rebound off Culp's shot and scored the Huskies' first goal of the game 37 seconds into the action. The Marauders answered 90 seconds later to push their lead back to 3-1 at the 32:19 mark.

Shaffer made a pair of saves to end the quarter to keep the game close before the final quarter.

The Huskies out-shot the Marauders 12-11 for the game though Millersville held a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. Shaffer finished the day with six saves.

Bloomsburg had an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.

The Huskies return to action next Saturday, October 8, when they welcome Mercyhurst to Steph Pettit Stadium for a 12:00 p.m. PSAC contest.
