BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Huskies took the lead with 2:52 to play in the first quarter and never looked back as the Bloomsburg women's basketball team rolled to a 76-37 win over the Shepherd University Rams in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action on Saturday. The Huskies improved to 4-9 on the year and 2-7 in conference play while the Rams dropped to 0-13 and 0-8 in the PSAC.
With 4:23 to play, Alison Hileman hit a three-pointer after
Emma Gochnauer (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) grabbed an offensive board and kicked the ball out to Hileman to give Bloomsburg a 7-5 lead. Meghan Shipley answered with a jumper just outside the paint to tie the game at 7-7 with 3:22 to play.
Hailey Hudak (Schwenksville, PA/Spring Ford) drew a foul on the Huskies' next possession and hit both of her free throws to give Bloomsburg a 9-7 lead with 2:52 to play. Hudak's free throws kicked off a 7-0 lead to close out the quarter and give the Huskies the lead for good.
Bloomsburg had a strong second quarter as the Huskies shot 52.6% (10-for-19) from the field and out-scored Shepherd 23-14 in the quarter to take a 39-21 lead at the break. Bloomsburg led by as many as 22 points in the quarter as
Kelly Leszcynski (Narareth, Pa./Nazareth) hit a three to give the Huskies a 35-13 advantage at the 3:19 mark. Bloomsburg eventually pushed its lead to 23, 39-16, in the final minutes of the quarter thanks to a jumper from
Julia Wheeler (Albion PA/Northwestern). Shepherd closed out the quarter with five unanswered points.
Katie Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick) made a layup to open the third quarter and the Huskies kept the Rams at bay as they out-scored Shepherd 21-11 in the quarter. Hileman hit a three with 58 seconds to play in the period to push the Huskies' lead to 60-32 going into the fourth quarter.
The Huskies held Shepherd to just five points in the fourth quarter and out-scored the Rams 16-5 in the final period for the 76-37 win, their largest margin of victory this season (39 points) and a tie for the largest margin since the Huskies beat Millersville on January 22, 2022.
Bloomsburg shot 41.2% (26-for-68) from the field for the game and were 12-for-31 (38.7%) from three-point range. Shepherd shot just 26.0% (13-for-50) from the field and were 4-for-14 (28.6%) from beyond the arc.
Hileman led the Huskies with 15 points while Starr added 12.
Megan Fisher (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) led the Huskies with nine rebounds and added six points while Brown had eight rebounds and six points.
Lauren Kirsch (Palmyra, PA/Lower Dauphin) dished out six assists and had seven rebounds.
The Huskies out-rebounded the Rams 47-34 and scored 16 points off 16 offensive rebounds. Bloomsburg got 40 points from its bench.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday, January 18 when they host Shippensburg for a PSAC East contest at 5:30 p.m. Bloomsburg honors Martin Luther King Jr. with its
Community Night game on January 18. There will be free admission for all fans.
