Fisher Hits Game Winner; Women's Basketball Downs PSAC East Leader Shippensburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – With 4.0 seconds left on the clock and the score tied 73-73, sophomore Katie Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick) found junior Megan Fisher (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) in the corner for an open three and the game-winning shot as Bloomsburg women's basketball took down the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East leader, Shippensburg, 76-73, Wednesday.

With less than a minute to play in regulation, Emma Gochnauer (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) hit the back end of a trip to the free throw line to give the Huskies a 71-69 lead but Ariel Jones answered as she streaked down the court for an open layup to tie the game, 71-71 six seconds later. Gochnauer drove to the basket on the Huskies' next possession to push their lead to 73-71 but Lauren Pettis answered to tie the game at 73. The Huskies had the ball in front of their bench and head coach Alison Tagliaferri called a time out to draw up their final offensive play. The ball went to Starr at the top of the key before she kicked it out to Fisher waiting in the far corner. Fisher drained the open three and gave Bloomsburg a 76-73 with 4.0 seconds on the clock.

The Raiders called a timeout to start their next possession and draw up a play but Jones had to settle for a desperation three away from her bench that hit off the rim and over to seal the Huskies 76-73 win.

The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Huskies against Shippensburg and is Bloomsburg's first win against the Raiders since March 2, 2019, when BU won 68-63 in the PSAC tournament.

The two teams battled back and forth as neither team had more than an eight-point lead at any time. The lead changed hands 17 times and the score was tied 19 times throughout the game.

Bloomsburg held a 24-20 lead after the first quarter though Shippensburg cut into the Huskies lead with a 14-12 second quarter. The Huskies held a 36-34 advantage going into halftime.

Shippensburg used an eight-point scoring run through the third quarter to take a 48-40 lead with 5:49 to play in the period. After a media time out, Fisher hit a three to kick off a 9-1 run for the Huskies and tied the game at 49-49. The two ended the third tied 54-54.

The lead changed hands four times in the fourth quarter alone and the score was tied five times. Fisher had 12 of her 18 points for the game in the final 10 minutes to lead the Huskies to victory.

Fisher paced the Huskies with 18 points and four rebounds while Abby Brown (Phillipsburg, N.J./Bethlehem Catholic) had 14 points, four assists and six boards. Starr finished the game with 13 points and six rebounds.

The Huskies shot 49.1% from the field for the game and were 8-for-10 (80%) from beyond the arc. The 80% three-point shooting was their highest in a single game this season.

The Huskies won the rebounding battle, edging out Shippensburg 33-30. The Raiders 30 rebounds is their lowest total of the season.

Jones led all players with 33 points while Pettis finished with a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double.

The Huskies return to action when they hit the road when they travel to Seton Hill University on Saturday for a 1:00 pm PSAC crossover game.
