#9 Field Hockey Blanks University of New Haven Sunday Afternoon

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The ninth-ranked Bloomsburg field hockey team improved to 8-2 for the year as the Huskies defeated the University of New Haven 4-0 Sunday afternoon. The Huskies got goals from three players, and five players found their way on the score sheet in the victory.

The Huskies wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Aydan McFarland (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) picked up her first assist of the game, getting the ball to freshman Genna Bush (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs), who slipped it past the goalie 2:44 into the game.

Bloomsburg maintained possession for most of the quarter, keeping the ball at midfield or in its offensive zone. McFarland pushed the Huskies' lead to 2-0 with just under seven to play in the first. After the Charger goalie saved two initial shots by Bella Culp (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) and Lillie Weaver (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) on a corner, McFarland grabbed the rebound off Weaver's attempt and snuck it under the goalie's pads for the score.

The Chargers had their best scoring opportunity with less than five to play in the quarter as Femke Boers put their first shot of the game on cage but was turned away by Jackie Nevel (Nescopeck, Pa./Berwick Area). UNH earned three straight penalty corners in 20 seconds and finally connected on the last one. Kelli Jacobson got a shot off for the Chargers, but Nevel kicked it away to keep them off the board. Eliza Cavan also tested Nevel, but the Husky keeper had the upper hand and kept her shutout alive.

UNH ended the period with two more corners and put two more shots on cage, but Nevel stopped both as the Huskies held on to their 2-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of action.

Both teams stayed off the scoreboard in the second and third quarters, though Bloomsburg out-shot the Chargers 6-2 during the two middle frames.

Bloomsburg added an insurance goal after just 2:17 elapsed in the fourth quarter as Bush found the back of the cage for the second time after another phenomenal pass into the circle from McFarland. After a corner from the Chargers did not result in a shot, McFarland took control of the ball and moved it down the field until she found Bush with space in front of the cage for a 3-0 Bloomsburg lead.

Alyxandra Flick (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) put the final touches on the Huskies' scoring as she grabbed the rebound off Sam Schaffer's (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) shot and put it home after another Bloomsburg penalty corner.

Bush led the Huskies with two goals, while McFarland had a goal and a pair of assists. Flick had the other goal for Bloomsburg, and Weaver was responsible for the additional assist.

Bloomsburg out-shot the Chargers 21-8, including a 19-7 advantage in shots on goal. Nevel made seven saves in the win, all of which came in the first half.

On Wednesday, the Huskies return to action for a top-10 match-up and a crucial Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference showdown against Kutztown. The game is set for 7:00 p.m. in Kutztown, Pa.
