No. 5 Field Hockey Downs No. 8 Millersville in Pivotal PSAC Contest

Nevel becomes first Husky to record four-straight shutouts since 2016

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – No. 5 field hockey defeated No. 8 Millersville, 1-0, in a critical Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at Steph Pettit Stadium on Wednesday night.

After a delayed start, Millersville (9-5, 3-4 PSAC) put pressure on Bloomsburg (12-3, 4-3) early on as Morgan Lennon forced junior goalkeeper Jackie Nevel (Nescopeck, Pa./Berwick Area) to make a save just 39 seconds into the game.

The Marauders nearly broke open the scoring on a corner at the 7:55 mark. A shot from Kristin Strijdom managed to find its way past Nevel but junior defender Meg Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) made the defensive save to keep the game scoreless.

With the score locked at 0-0 after 30 minutes of play, Millersville held a 9-1 advantage in shots.

The Huskies turned the pressure around on the Marauders in the second half, outshooting Millersville, 5-2.

With the threat of overtime looming near the end of the fourth quarter, the maroon and gold earned a penalty corner with just over two minutes to play. On the corner, the ball found its way to sophomore Kate Ferguson (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) who dished it to freshman Genna Bush (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) for the game-winning goal.

Nevel recorded her fourth straight shutout of the season with a four save performance. She is the first Bloomsburg goalkeeper to post four straight shutouts since Lindsay Cassel in 2016.

The Huskies' win moves them into fourth place in the PSAC with two conference games remaining.

Bloomsburg travels to Frostburg on Saturday, October 21 for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Bobcats before returning home on Tuesday, October 24 for a pivotal PSAC matchup against Mansfield.
