Men's Basketball Earns Comeback Victory over Holy Family, 75-73

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg men's basketball team took down Holy Family, 75-73, in a back-and-forth contest inside Nelson Field House on Saturday afternoon.

Desmond Freeman (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) opened the scoring for Bloomsburg (2-2) with a three-pointer after a steal from Louie Wild (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic).

The Huskies and Holy Family (1-3) exchanged points in the opening minutes of the contest, with Louie Wild (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) making it a two-possession game for the first time nearly four minutes in with a shot from outside the arc.

Both teams continued to trade the lead in the first half, as neither team was able to gain more than a six-point lead in the first 20 minutes.

Jake Nelson (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Rustin) posted 10 defensive rebounds and 7 points in the first half, while Wild led the Huskies with eight points as Bloomsburg trailed 35-29 at halftime.

Matt Bengel (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) opened the second half with an and-one that energized the Huskies offense.

Despite shooting 50 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point territory in the second half, Bloomsburg trailed for much of the frame.

Another momentum-swinging and-one from Bengel tied the game at 66 points apiece with four minutes to play.

After a falling behind by three with a under two minute to play, Wild drained his fifth triple of the day to tie the game once more. Four made free throws in a row gave the Huskies the lead with just 21 seconds remaining.

A late comeback attempt from Holy Family fell short in the dying seconds of the game as the Huskies picked up their first home win of the season.

It is the first victory inside Nelson Field House for head coach Chris Bess.

Bengel lead the team with a season-high 21 points, 17 of which came in the second half. Nelson finished with 19 points and 18 rebounds while Wild nailed five three-pointers en route to an 18-point night.

The Huskies return to action on Friday, December 1 as they take on Gannon at 5 p.m.
