BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – An early lead and sharp-shooting first half led Lock Haven to a 108-70 victory over Bloomsburg's men's basketball team in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest Wednesday evening inside the Nelson Field House.
The Huskies (1-18, 1-14 PSAC) fell behind early as the Bald Eagles (14-6, 10-5 PSAC) started off the first half converting 14 of their first 20 field goal attempts to build a 21-point lead just over half way through the opening frame. Lock Haven's shooting did not cool down from there as the team finished 41-for-63 (65.1%) for the game from the field en route to setting their new season high for points in a game during the 2022-23 season.
Bloomsburg finished the game shooting a modest 40.6% (28-for-69) from the floor and had three players in double figures.
Ash Kemble (Myerstown, Pa./Fork Union Military Academy) had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and
Jake Nelson (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Rustin) also finished the contest with 14 points.
Desmond Freeman (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) was the third Husky in double figures as the guard scored 12 points and went 5-for-9 from the floor, which included a mark of 2-for-5 from beyond the arc.
Raphael Castillo (Newark, N.J./Morristown Beard) and
Dylan Harris (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) each had seven points off the bench.
For Lock Haven, Jayy Davis led the scoring outburst with 23 points as he went 5-for-7 from three-point land. Eli Washington had 19 points and shot at a high percentage, going 7-for-9 from the field to go along with a 5-for-6 clip from the charity stripe. Justice Shoats added 13 points, and Jalen Gorham and James Price added 11 points each as the Bald Eagles finished with five players in double figures.
Early on, the Huskies matched the pace of the Bald Eagles as it was a 14-10 game six minutes into the contest following a jumper by Freeman. From that point, however, Lock Haven would go on a huge 20-4 scoring run over the course of the next five minutes to go up 34-14. The Bald Eagles continued its hot shooting from the floor and closed out the frame on a 26-12 scoring run from that point to lead 60-26 at the half.
Bloomsburg's offense picked up the pace in the second half and went 17-for-36 (47.2%) from the floor to score 44 points in the frame. The team's second-half scoring effort was led by Nelson, who scored 10 of his 14 points in the final half. Freeman added eight in the half and Harris scored all seven of his points in a short sequence late in the period. Though the Huskies scored 44 points, the first-half deficit was too much to overcome and LHU pushed its lead to 108-70 by the time the clock hit zero.
Lock Haven forced 21 Bloomsburg turnovers that they converted into 22 points. Additionally, the Bald Eagles scored 58 of their points in the paint and 31 on fast break opportunities.
Bloomsburg scored 34 points in the paint and received 21 points from its bench throughout the contest.
The Huskies will return to action on Saturday with an away game at Millersville (13-8, 10-5 PSAC). The contest is scheduled to tip off at 3:00 PM.
