Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Bloomsburg baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader in their season-opening series at Charleston on Saturday.

The Huskies fell in the first contest 3-2 after Charleston's Tyler Dellerman hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh, then Bloomsburg fell to the Golden Eagles by a tally of 5-3 after the home team scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning.

Four different Bloomsburg players had an RBI on the day, and Bryce Porter (Lincoln University, Pa./Perkiomen) led the way with two in the second game as he went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk. Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) had an RBI in both games and was 2-for-5 on the day. Tyler LePage (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) recorded his first RBI as a Husky in the first game.

On the mound in the first game, Nate Baranski (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) tossed 3.1 strong innings as he picked up three strikeouts and allowed just one earned run on two hits. Michael Standen (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) also three 3.0 innings, but he was charged with the loss.

The first game saw three scoreless innings until both teams scored two runs in the fourth inning. In the top of the fourth, Bloomsburg got on the scoreboard first when Metzger had an RBI single to left field that knocked in Porter. After Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) advanced to third base on a walk, Tyler LePage (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) knocked in the second run of the inning on a groundout to the pitcher. The Golden Eagles, however, stranded Metzger at third to get out of the jam by forcing a groundout.

In the bottom of the fourth, Charleston scored its first run of the game on an RBI triple by AJ Karosas to right field. Karosas then scored on a sacrifice fly to tie things up at 2-2. The game then remained scoreless until the seventh inning. In the seventh, the Golden Eagles got a runner on base with a lead-off single, then he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. From there, Dellerman knocked in the game-winning run with his RBI single.

In Game 2, Bloomsburg again got on the scoreboard first, and this time they were able to score the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. It was graduate student Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) who hit a double to right-center field with one out to get things going. In the next at-bat, Porter knocked in Chasanov with an RBI double. A pair of groundouts by Bloomsburg got Charleston out of the inning down 1-0.

The Golden Eagles, however, would regain their advantage in the third inning. After a 1-2-3 inning by Bloomsburg in the top-half of the inning, Charleston's first two hitters got out on a fly out and groundout – but that's when the team started a two-out rally. Charleston's next two hitters got on base by way of a walk, then an RBI double scored the first run of the inning. A balk during the next at-bat advanced a runner from third to score the team's second run, then an RBI single to left field crossed the third runner of the inning to give the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead.

Bloomsburg chip into the deficit with a run in the fifth and then tied it up on a Metzger RBI single in the sixth, but Charleston scored a run in the seventh and eighth innings while holding the Huskies scoreless to hang on for a 5-3 win.

The Huskies will close out the weekend series on Sunday with a single nine-inning game at Charleston. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.
