CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Bloomsburg baseball team fell to Charleston 7-3 in a non-conference game on Sunday to close out its season-opening series this weekend.
The Huskies held a 3-2 lead halfway through the game, but a four-run sixth inning was enough to give the Golden Eagles the win.
Brady Ebbert (Etters, Pa./Red Land) had a solid day at the plate for Bloomsburg, going 3-for-4 with one run batted in and a walk.
Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) had a solo home run in the fourth inning, and he had two RBI's while going 2-for-3 with a walk.
Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) and
Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) each had a hit to bring the team's total to seven on the day.
On the mound, Josh Marquad was given the start and allowed one earned run in 4.0 innings while striking out five.
Zach Steen (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) threw 1.1 innings and struck out three while
Brandon Walters (York, Pa./Central York) threw 2.2 innings and allowed just one earned run.
The Huskies scored the first run of the game in the second inning when Ebbert had a two-out RBI single that knocked in
Tyler LePage (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) from second base. Charleston, however, was able to tie it back up in the bottom of the third when Andre Martinez scored on an error.
Ernst hit his solo HR in the top of the fourth to give the Huskies another one-run lead, but Charleston again tied things up in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double. Ernst then knocked in his second run of the ballgame in the top of the fifth with an RBI single that scored
Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area).
The bottom of the sixth saw Charleston take control of the game with its four-run inning. The Golden Eagles were able to load the bases and scored its first run on a bunt to tie the game up at 3-3. Charleston then took a one-run lead after a walk allowed a runner to score from third in another bases-loaded situation. A two-run single in the next at-bat made the score 6-3, and the Golden Eagles added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to make things 7-3.
Charleston used five different pitchers in the game and allowed three earned runs on seven hits. Andrew Gormley was given the win and Sam Slodic earned a save after striking out six hitters and not allowing a baserunner in 3.0 innings. For Bloomsburg, Steen was charged with the loss.
Bloomsburg will be back in action next weekend at the Wilson Tops Tournament in Wilson, NC. The Huskies will play a game against Jefferson and Bluefield State each day in the two-day event.
