BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team fell to Shippensburg by a final score of 12-10 during a home Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game Friday afternoon at Danny Litwhiler Field.
The Raiders (14-8, 2-2 PSAC East) trailed by three runs heading into the top of the ninth, but the squad used a five-run inning to rally past the Huskies (6-7, 2-2 PSAC East) for the two-run victory.
Bloomsburg scored 10 runs off 12 hits – seven of which went for extra bases.
Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) paced the Huskies' offense, going 3-for-4 with four runs batted in, three runs scored, a double and home run.
Bryce Porter (Lincoln University, Pa./Perkiomen) had two doubles during his 2-for-4 day, and
Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) had a three-run homer to go along with a single.
Brady Ebbert (Etters, Pa./Red Land) hit his first career home run and
Jonathan LaBarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) had a double for the team's seventh extra-base hit.
The Huskies offense started off hot as they scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to gain a quick 5-0 lead. Bloomsburg loaded the bases with three straight walks to start the game, then Gibble had a two-run single to get two runners across home plate. In the next at-bat, Ernst delivered his three-run blast to put Bloomsburg up 5-0.
Shippensburg was able to get one run back in the second on a solo home run, then the Raiders scored two more in the third on an RBI single and sacrifice fly. Gibble hit his solo HR in the bottom half of the third to put Bloomsburg back up 6-3, but Shippensburg would tie the game up at 6-6 after scoring three runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run HR by Justin Byler and RBI single from Jaxon Dalena.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) came up clutch with a two-run single in a bases-loaded situation with two outs to regain the lead. Then in the sixth, a solo homer by Ebbert and RBI double by Gibble gave Bloomsburg a 10-6 lead.
Shippensburg's Byler had another solo home run in the seventh to make it a 10-7 game, then the graduate student would go deep again in the ninth for his third home run of the day – this time his three-run shot tied the game up at 10-10 and sparked the Raiders' five-run rally. Shippensburg would score its final two runs on an error during a line drive that was hit to center field.
In the bottom of the ninth, Porter had a double to bring the tying run to the plate, but back-to-back fly outs ended the game.
Left-handed pitcher
Scott Gilbert (Scranton, Pa./Abington Heights) was given the start for Bloomsburg and the sophomore struck out eight hitters through six innings of play while throwing 105 pitches.
Josh Marquard (York, Pa./Central York) and
Dylan Lubinski (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) combined to go the final three innings.
For Shippensburg, Jackson LoBianco picked up his second win of the year after throwing 2.1 scoreless innings. Marquard was given his first loss of the year.
Bloomsburg will be back in action on Saturday as it continues its three-game series with Shippensburg. The Huskies will play a doubleheader at Shippensburg on Sautrday with the first pitch scheduled for 12:00 PM.
