Baseball Drops Conference Doubleheader At Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team dropped a pair of games at Shippensburg during a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies (6-9, 2-4 PSAC East) fell in the first game 5-2, and the Raiders (16-8, 4-2 PSAC East) took the second game by a score of 7-4.

Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) was 2-for-3 in the first game and had a two-run double that scored both of Bloomsburg's runs. Eli Riley (Harrisburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) finished the day with a combined three hits in two games, and Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) had three hits and scored twice in the second game.

Dansby Keenan (Cleveland Heights, Oh./Benedictine) was a perfect 2-for-2 in the second game and had an RBI double. Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) also had two hits in the second game as the Huskies scored four runs on 13 hits.

In the first game, both pitchers were dealing early on as Bloomsburg's Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) and Shippensburg's Noah Nabholz allowed a combined four baserunners in the first three innings as each team was held scoreless. Then in the fourth, Bloomsburg got a rally going when Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) singled to right field and Ernst drew a walk with two outs. Viggiano then delivered a two-run double to right center field in the next at-bat, and Marshman had a one, two, three inning in the bottom of the fourth as Bloomsburg got out to a 2-0 lead.

Bloomsburg's hitters were set down in order in the top of the fifth, then Shippensburg tied the game up at 2-2 when Brock Piper hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. Jaxon Dalena had a two-run triple in the sixth, and Heckman knocked in Dalena on an RBI double to give Shippensburg a 5-2 lead heading into the final inning.

The Huskies would get two runners on base in the top of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate, but a double play ended the contest to give the Raiders a three-run victory.

Marshman threw all six innings for Bloomsburg and struck out three hitters while picking up his first loss of the year. Nabholz earned the win for Shippensburg after throwing all seven innings and striking out six hitters while giving up just two runs on four hits.

Game Two saw more offense early on, and it was Shippensburg's Justin Byler who gave the Raiders the first lead of the contest when he hit his fourth home run of the series in the bottom of the first inning to give Shippensburg a 1-0 lead.

Bloomsburg knotted things up at 1-1 when Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) had an RBI single in the top of the second, but Shippensburg responded with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning and then scored two more runs in the third to gain a 4-1 lead.

After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, RBI's by Bryce Porter (Lincoln University, Pa./Perkiomen) and Alex Ruiz (Lancaster, Pa./McCaskey) in the top of the sixth cut into Bloomsburg's deficit and made it a 4-3 game. Shippensburg got one of those runs back in the seventh, but then Keenan had his RBI double in the top of the eighth to make a one-run game once again. The Raiders scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 7-4 game, and Bloomsburg was held scoreless in the top of the ninth as Shippensburg hung on for the win.

On the mound, Shippensburg's Eric Bohenek picked up his third win of the year after throwing 4.1 innings and striking out five. Bloomsburg's Nate Baranski (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) went 6.1 innings and struck out three hitters, but picked up the loss.

The Huskies will return to Danny Litwhiler Field at Bloomsburg for their next outing, which will be on Tuesday against Clarion. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM.
