Lacrosse Drops Tough Battle with Kutztown at Home, Wednesday Afternoon

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – It was a tale of two halves for the Huskies as Bloomsburg lacrosse fell to Kutztown, 16-11, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action, Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies dropped to 4-4 on the year and 1-2 in conference play while the Golden Bears improved to 6-1 and 3-0 in the PSAC East.

Junior Amanda Stoll (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) got the Huskies off to a hot start as she won the opening draw and gave Bloomsburg a chance to set up its offense. Senior Kelsey Clauss (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) found an open Kate Roberts (Lehman, Pa./Lake Lehman) for her 16th goal of the season and the 1-0 lead 50 seconds into action. The Golden Bears answered under a minute later but freshman Reiley Knize (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton), Roberts, and Clauss scored three in a row for the Huskies to give BU a 4-1 lead with 9:27 to play in the first quarter.

Lailah ElBouazzaoui answerd for Kutztown before senior Annie Rollins (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) sandwiched a pair of goals around a Kutztown strike to give the Huskies a 6-3 lead with 5:27 to play in the opening frame. After a shot by Madison Coyle (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) was stopped by the KU goalie, Jenna Blesson, Maya Fulmer (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) scooped up the ground ball and got it back to Coyle who quickly fed it to Roberts for her second goal of the game and the 7-3 lead at the end of the first.

The Golden Bears opened the second quarter with three-straight goals to cut the lead to 7-6 with 8:01 to play but Roberts took advantage of an extra-man opportunity for the Huskies and buried a shot off a pass from Stoll to give BU an 8-6 lead with 7:10 to play before halftime.

Kutztown tied the game with back-to-back goals in the final 1:41 of the half but Roberts won the draw after the game-tying goal and went straight to cage to give the Huskies a 9-8 lead with 18 seconds before the break. Coyle won the ensuing draw control and Clauss drew a foul with 0:00.2 seconds left in the half but her free position shot was stopped by Blesson. The Huskies took the 9-8 lead into the break.

The Golden Bears came out of the break quickly and scored a pair of goals within 43 seconds of each other to enroute to a 4-0 third quarter. Kutztown took it's first lead of the game with 11:12 to play, 10-9. The Bears led 12-9 at the end of the third.

Fulmer cut the deficit back to two with a goal just 21 seconds into the fourth quarter but two-straight from the Golden Bears gave them their largest lead of the game up to that point, 14-10, with 10:44 to play in regulation.

Roberts found the back of the net for the sixth time as she scored with 9:50 to play on a free position shot after Blesson received a yellow card and was replaced by Marisa Bragg. Morgan Hurd and ElBouazzaoui finished off the scoring for Kutztown with two goals in the final 3:33 to seal the 16-11 win for Kutztown.

Roberts led the Huskies with six goals and an assist while Rollins scored a pair of goals as well. Stoll won a team-best seven draw controls and Vittoria LaBanca (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) and Lauren Foley (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) each had three ground balls. Defensively, LaBanca, Coyle, and Stoll all caused a pair of turnovers.

Foley finished the day with 13 saves in cage to go with her two GBs and one caused turnover.

The Huskies hit the road for their next two games as they travel to West Chester on Saturday, March 25 for a 1:00 p.m. PSAC East contest before heading to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, March 29 for a 4:00 p.m. conference game.
