Box Score 2 BOWIE, Md. – The Bloomsburg softball team fell to Bowie State by a final tally of 5-4 during the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday in Bowie, Md.
The second game of the doubleheader was suspended heading into the bottom of the fifth inning due to darkness. The score of the second game was 5-3 in favor of Bowie State heading into the bottom of the fifth, and the game was called final on Wednesday morning, giving the Bulldogs a two-run victory for the second game.
In the first game, the Huskies (4-3, 0-0 PSAC East) got out to an early lead when
Taylor Welsh (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) knocked in
Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) for the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. However, Bowie State (7-6, 0-0 CIAA) would answer in the bottom half with a two-run inning to take its first lead of the contest.
In the top of the second,
Sage Weidlich (Pittston, Pa./Pittston) delivered a single to right center field that allowed
Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) to score for Bloomsburg and knot things up at 2-2. The contest continued to be a back-and-forth affair as both teams would score across the next two innings and be given a chance to take the lead.
Bloomsburg had a two-run fourth inning as Kaleigh Lenner and
Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) both knocked in runs to give Bloomsburg a 4-3 lead. The Bulldogs would answer with a two-run inning of their own in the bottom half to gain a 5-4 lead, which is where things stayed as starting pitcher Akirra Pullen held the Huskies scoreless for the final three innings.
Pullen finished the game with one strikeout while allowing eight hits through seven innings to pick up the win. Bloomsburg's
Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) pitched all six innings for the Huskies and finished with six strikeouts.
At the plate, Iseminger led the way for Bloomsburg by going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Weidlich also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Kammy Kropinski (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh), Little and Lenner also recorded one hit to bring Bloomsburg's total to eight on the day.
In the second game, all eight runs that were scored in the contest came during the first two innings. The Bulldogs held the Huskies scoreless in the top of the first, then the home team scored three in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. Bowie State scored its first two runs of the game on a passed ball, then an RBI single by Pullen gave the team a 3-0 lead heading into the second inning.
Bloomsburg's offense answered the call in the top of the second and immediately scored three runs of its own to tie things up. The Huskies offense got going when
Jayla Bartholomew (Williamsport, Pa/Williamsport) knocked in Welsh for the team's first run, then Weidlich had a two-run single to tie things up at 3-3.
Bowie State's Kayla Evans came up clutch in the bottom half of the inning as her two-run double would put the Bulldogs up 5-3, which is where things stayed until the contest was called in the fifth inning due to darkness.
Weidlich led the Huskies at the plate in the second game as she went 1-for-2 with two RBI's. For Bowie State, Evans had two hits while Pullen, Breanna Harvey, Sydney Edmond, Brittany Brewer and Shanya Gordon all recorded a hit.
On the mound, Bowie State's Karen Fritzges earned the win after pitching three scoreless innings.
Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled) was charged with the loss for Bloomsburg.
The Huskies are scheduled to play at the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina for a doubleheader on Saturday in their next contest. The games are scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.
