Women's Lacrosse Late Comeback Falls Short Against #13 Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Bloomsburg lacrosse team scored seven goals in the fourth quarter, but the Huskies' late-game comeback fell just short as #13 Mercy hung on for a 15-9 win, Wednesday. The Huskies dropped to 3-1 while the Mavericks improved to 3-2.

Just under a minute into action in the last quarter, Sydney Corley scored to push the Mercy lead to 15-2 but the Huskies rattled off seven-straight to pull within six and put the pressure on the Mavericks. The Huskies just ran out of time as Annie Rollins (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) scored the game's last goal with nine seconds left to cut the lead to 15-9, where is stood at the final horn.

Freshman Julie Cote kicked off the run for BU with her sixth goal of the season at the 12:55 mark on a free position shot. Freshman Reiley Knize (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) won the ensuing draw control and senior Haley Williams (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) went to cage for her fifth of the year and the Huskies' fourth goal of the game.

Mercy won the next draw but turned the ball over and Amanda Biehl (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) picked up the ground ball to kick off a good clear for the Huskies. Rollins eventually got the ball in her stick and found the back of the net for the second time to make it a 10-goal game, 15-5, with 9:41 to play. Neither team had a clean possession over the next two and half minutes and Kelsey Clauss (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) took advantage of a miscue by the Maverick defense with 7:11 to play. Clauss drew a foul and buried her free position shot to stop the clock and cut the lead to nine, 15-6.

The Huskies won the next draw and traded turnovers with Mercy before Rollins scored her third of the game with 5:56 to play. Knize cut the lead to seven, 15-8, with 3:29 remaining after a successful clear for the Huskies and Rollins made it a six-goal game in the final 10 seconds of action, 15-9.

Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk got the Mavericks on the board first just 44 seconds into action, but Amanda Stoll (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) tied the game at 1-1 with 12:48 to play in the first. The Mavericks then went on a 10-goal run over the rest of the first, the second quarter, and the beginning of the third. Rollins halted the run with her fifth of the year and first of the game with 9:46 to play in the third. The Mavericks then rattled off four-straight to push their lead to 15-2 before the Huskies fourth-quarter comeback attempt.

Rollins led the Huskies with four goals while Clauss, Kate Roberts (Lehman, Pa./Lake Lehman), and Madison Coyle (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) all won three draw controls. Stoll won two and collected her 100th and 101st career draw control.

Biehl caused a pair of turnovers and picked up a team-best four ground balls. Lauren Foley (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) finished the day with 11 saves in cage for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg get back to action on Sunday when they return home to host Southern New Hampshire University at Steph Pettit Field in a 12:00 p.m. contest.
