Bloomsburg Splits Conference Doubleheader with Shippensburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg softball team came away with one win and one loss Friday afternoon as they faced off against Shippensburg. Shippensburg got the best of them in their previous two matchups this season, but the Huskies came away with a win this afternoon to put them at 8-10 in conference play this season.

The Huskies dropped the opening match of the day in a tight contest. On the mound, Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) finished with 10 strikeouts, adding to her league-leading 176 strikeouts on the year.

The Huskies went up 1-0 early in the contest on an error from Shippensburg in the bottom of the second. Bloomsburg would hold its one-run lead until the top of the seventh inning when the Raiders responded with a timely homer from Hannah Marsteller. Shippensburg put up two more runs to close out the top of the seventh, now up by a score of 3-1.

Now in the bottom of the seventh and needing a quick response, Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) got on base with a double to right field. The next play, Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) gave Culp the chance to score on a well-placed single up the middle. Culp scored on the play and the Huskies found themselves within one, but unfortunately the Raiders defense got the best of them and closed out the opening game by a score of 3-2.

The second matchup of the day found the Huskies coming out on top this time by the same score of 3-2.

Culp highlighted the Husky offense in the game, finishing 2-for-2 with a triple. Five more Huskies finished with hits as the offense was clutch and consistent throughout the second matchup of the day.

A series of singles from Culp, Little, and Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) in the bottom of the first put the Huskies up 2-1 early, and that's how the score would remain until the bottom of the fifth inning. Culp's triple down the right field line put her in scoring position and thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Little on the following play, the Huskies were up 3-1 after the fifth inning.

After the Raiders got within one in the sixth inning, it was time for the Husky defense to close out the game. Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) did just that. With one out, Lenner made a spectacular grab on a line drive likely headed to left field for a double, the next play the Huskies closed out the game on a fly out.

Lyndsey Reinoehl (Shenandoah Heights, Pa./Marian Catholic) got the win on the mound for the Huskies, her first of the season. Eberly finished with her first save of the season as well as the Huskies finished the day with a win.

The Bloomsburg softball team is back in action this Sunday, April 16th as they host Shepard for another conference doubleheader. The original contest set for Saturday the 15th was rescheduled to Sunday due to weather.
