BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – It was a day full of hits for the Huskies as they split their doubleheader with Shepherd to move to 9-11 in conference play this season.
The opening match of the day was a thriller that saw the Bloomsburg softball team put up 16 runs on 20 hits, their highest run total of the season.
The offense got started early in the second inning with eight runs from the Huskies. A series of singles had Bloomsburg in scoring position and
Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) got them on the board first with an RBI off a single to left field. Two plays later the Huskies found themselves up 3-0 on a well-placed single from
Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) and the Husky offense was humming. Fast forward a single play and now, with the bases loaded, the highlight of the day came as
Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) striped a homer to left field, a grand slam as the Huskies blew the game wide open. Bloomsburg finished the second inning up 8-0 on an RBI double from
Mia Nemeth (Drums, Pa/Marian Catholic).
The latter half of the game was a back and forth offensive battle for both teams as Shepherd brought the score within one in the top of the sixth off a homer from Camdyn Noland.
Now only leading by a score of 10-9, the Huskies responded with six more runs in the bottom of the sixth. A double to right center from
Taylor Kranzley (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) put the Huskies up 15-9. The Bloomsburg offense was finished for the game after a sacrifice fly from Nemeth to bring the Huskies' run total to 16 on the contest.
The Rams rallied late on consecutive RBI doubles in the top of the seventh to tie the game. They would clinch the win early in extra innings on a homer from Lexi Clatterbuck.
In their second matchup of the day, the Huskies needed a strong performance from
Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area). They got just that as Sowers finished with seven strikeouts and only allowed seven hits on 28 at-bats.
Sage Weidlich (Pittston, Pa./Pittston) had a day on offense as she finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run, her third of the year. Weidlich's homer got the Huskies on the board in the bottom of the third, followed quickly by an RBI double from
Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area). Just an inning later, Weidlich earned two more RBIs as she nailed a double to left center to put the Huskies up 4-0.
Five more Huskies finished with a hit in the second matchup of the day as the Huskies bounced back with a 4-2 win after a tough loss in their previous matchup.
The Bloomsburg softball team is on the road all next week as they open the week on Tuesday with a conference matchup at Mansfield. The doubleheader is set for a 2:00 PM start.
