MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Bloomsburg softball team put two more in the win column after an impressive showing on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies swept their conference rival Mansfield to move to 11-11 in conference action this season.
In the opening game action,
Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) stayed hot on the mound, tallying 13 strikeouts to extend her conference-leading total on the season. Sowers is now nearly 40 strikeouts ahead of the competition. Sowers also finished the opening contest with only four hits allowed on 22 at-bats.
On the offensive side, the Huskies put up ten runs in the opening match, hitting early and often as eight Huskies finished with at least a hit.
Mia Nemeth (Drums, Pa/Marian Catholic) got the Huskies on the board early in the second inning.
Taylor Kranzley (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) got herself on base with a well-placed double to right center and scored on the following play thanks to a fielding error and an RBI single from Nemeth.
The Huskies most productive inning of the day came later in the contest. Now up 4-0 in the top of the fifth, Bloomsburg's offense blew the game wide open with a four-run inning. Kranzley got on base early on a walk and the very next play Nemeth shot an RBI double to right center. Nemeth finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI's. Nemeth scored not two plays later off an RBI single from
Taylor Welsh (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) and the Huskies were now up 6-0. With two Huskies on base,
Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) was next in line for Bloomsburg and singled, earning two RBI's on a fielding error. The Huskies closed out the inning up 8-0.
Welsh closed out the offense for the Huskies an inning later off a single to center field, earning two RBI's on the play. The Huskies won the game 10-1 and were ready to keep the ball rolling into the second matchup of the day.
Fresh off the dominant victory in the opening match, the Huskies battled through a tight bout in the second game of the day, not leading by more than a run until the fifth inning.
Nemeth was the hot hand, and she got the Huskies on the board early with a homer striped down center field. The Bloomsburg offense went dormant, and the game was tied at one until the top of the fifth. With the bases loaded,
Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) hit a perfectly placed single to right field to put the Huskies up 2-1. Bloomsburg finished the inning with another run on an error to extend their lead to two runs.
Needing a little more of a cushion to ensure the victory, Kranzley answered the call in the top of the seventh with an RBI double to close out the Husky offense.
Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled) had a strong start on the mound, only allowing three hits on the day on 24 at-bats. Eberly also tallied eight strikeouts as she earned an impressive win, her third on the season.
