BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – After winning its last three conference matches to clinch a spot in the tournament, the men's tennis team is set to play Edinboro in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Semifinals on its home court Saturday at the Burt Reese Tennis Center in Bloomsburg.
The Huskies pulled off wins in their last three PSAC matchups as the squad beat West Chester (W, 7-0), Shepherd (W, 4-3) and Kutztown (W, 6-1) to gain the No. 4 seed in the tournament. Additionally, the team's solid stretch of play includes winning four of its last five contests.
Bloomsburg will enter the semifinal match with a balanced squad that features six players with at least two singles wins in conference play.
Victor Martinez (Barcelona, Spain/Padre Damian Sagrados Corazones) leads the team in conference singles wins with four and sports a 4-1 record, and
Fernando Barros (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Hoosac School) is a perfect 3-0 in PSAC play.
Albert Martin (Barcelona/Instituto Menendez y Pelayo),
Vishesh Patel (Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India/Asia English School),
Oliver Wiesemann (Jena, Germany/Deutsche Schule Málaga (Spain)) and
Scott Redmond (Paget, Bermuda/Warwick Academy) all have two conference wins.
In doubles play, the Huskies have four tandems that have pulled off wins in conference play. Redmond and Barros have a team-high three doubles wins, and
Arnav Sharma (Haryana,India/Suncity School) and Wiesemann are 2-0 in conference play as a team. Martin and Patel have a doubles win together, and Sharma also paired up with
Sergio Dilan (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cedin) to win a doubles match. Overall in doubles matches, Sharma leads the team with a total of seven wins with different partners.
Edinboro enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed comes into championship weekend as the two-time defending conference champs. The Fighting Scots hold a 6-0 conference record and are 15-3 this season overall.
Individually, Edinboro has five players who are undefeated in conference singles matches, and the squad is led by 2022 PSAC Individual Champion Bruno Sabio.
The semifinal match is scheduled to start no earlier than 12:30 PM following the women's semifinal matches at the Burt Reese Tennis Center in Bloomsburg, which will host championship weekend. The women's semifinal was originally schedule to begin at 11:00 AM, but start times have been moved up an hour due to projected inclement weather.
The other men's semifinal match taking place on Saturday will be between No. 2 seed Mercyhurst and No. 3 seed Millersville. The PSAC Championship is scheduled to take place on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
