INDIANA, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team won its fourth straight game by defeating Indiana (Pa.) by a final score of 10-8 during a non-conference road game Tuesday afternoon.
The Huskies (20-13, 10-8 PSAC East) found themselves in a tight game halfway through the contest, but a huge five-run sixth inning gave Bloomsburg a four-run lead that it was able to cling to despite a late comeback attempt by the Crimson Hawks (18-25, 10-10 PSAC West).
The win not only keeps the team's winning streak alive, but it also extends Bloomsburg's solid stretch of play and gives the Huskies a record 13-3 in their last 16 games.
Trailing 6-5 entering the top of the sixth inning,
Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) led the Huskies off with a lead-off walk. LaBarbera was then hit by a pitch during the next at-bat to get two runners on base with no outs. After a wild pitch advanced both runners,
Brady Ebbert (Etters, Pa./Red Land) recorded his third RBI of the day and tied the game up with an RBI single.
Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) then had a two-run double to give Bloomsburg an 8-6 lead. Viggiano's double was his 17
th of the season, which is tied for the most in the conference and tied for the sixth most in a single season in program history.
Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) kept the rally going with a ground-rule double that scored Viggiano, then
Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) knocked in Metzger on a single to make it a 10-6 ballgame.
After a scoreless seventh inning, IUP was able to get its first two hitters on base in the bottom of the eighth and threatened to get a rally of their own going. Following a groundout during the third at-bat fo the inning, a walk loaded the bases with one out and brought the tying run to the plate.
A fly out gave the Huskies their second out of the inning without surrendering any runs, but then Torrey Roper had a two-run single up the middle that made it a 10-8 game. Bloomsburg pitcher
Michael Standen (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) was able to get out of the jam, however, as a force out at second base on a fielder's choice got the team out of the inning still up by two runs.
In the ninth, Standen retired the side in order to pick up his second save of the year.
Nick Heubel (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) recorded his first win of the year after pitching two scoreless innings for the Huskies.
