GREENSBURG, Pa. – The men's soccer team opened the 2023 season with a 1-0 victory against Seton Hill on Thursday afternoon.Â
After 86 minutes of scoreless action, the Huskies finally convert offensive pressure into a goal.
Teagan Wallace (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) collected a deflected cross just outside the ride side of the box before sending a cross to the back post and finding sophomore
Sam Blumberger (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy)Â for the deciding goal.Â
Bloomsburg (1-0) controlled most of the contest, outshooting Seton Hill (0-1) 18-3 and continuing the push following a red card for the Griffins in the 74th minute.Â
How it happened:Â
The Griffins were the aggressors out of the gate, maintaining much of the possession for the first 10 minutes of the match. Goalkeeper
Brady Rimple (Cherryville, Pa./Northampton Area)Â saved the first shot of the 2023 campaign after an early effort from Seton Hill's Julian Marker. That effort would be the only shot allowed by the Huskies' defense in the first half, outpacing the Griffins in the category 10-1.
The second half reflected much of the first half, with Bloomsburg pushing the pace. The constant presence in the Griffins' half forced a costly decision for Seton Hill, resulting in the sending-off.Â
The Huskies found the back of the net for the first time in the game with a header by
Anthony Schlee (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) (Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley), but the line judge ruled the forward offside.
The efforts of Schlee and
Shay Gillen (Archbald, Pa./Valley View) (four shots each) and
Jaliyl Melvin (Mount Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional),
Alex Wilsterman (Orefield, Pa./Parkland)Â and
Sammy Ames (Holly Ridge, N.C./Dixon)Â (two shots apiece) spearheaded the Huskies' attacking efforts.Â
On the horizon:
The men's soccer team continues its first week of action with another road contest on Saturday, September 2, at 11:00 a.m. against University of Findlay.
