BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg men's soccer team dropped its home opener against undefeated West Chester Saturday evening.
The Huskies (1-2-2) were slow to get started in the first half and created several opportune scoring chances during the last 45 minutes, but a late header from the Golden Rams (5-0-1) proved to be the decider.
How It Happened:
The matchup between the two sides was back and forth, with the two teams trading shots and physical play throughout the first 45 minutes.
Frankie Taylor for West Chester and
Sammy Ames (Holly Ridge, N.C./Dixon) for Bloomsburg served as the offensive focal points for each side, both players recording the first two shots of the game for their teams.
The Huskies received the first of three yellow cards shown on the evening with a booking in the 24th minute. The Golden Rams continued their offensive pressure with four more corner opportunities.
Bloomsburg turned on the offensive intensity in the second half by utilizing the wings. Fullbacks
Braden Alicea (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) and
Stephen Hollis (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East), along with the wing play of Ames and
Jaliyl Melvin (Mount Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional), turned the tables on West Chester.
The Huskies outshot the Golden Rams 12-6 in the second half. Fouls continued to be a problem for Bloomsburg, as the team received two additional yellows in the second half to curtail any forward progress.
Both teams had late opportunities to capture a decision, but a late set piece for West Chester sent the Golden Rams home with the win. Josh Daniels stepped up to the ball and sent the ball deep into the Bloomsburg box, where it found the head of Taylor, who silenced the home crowd.
With just over a minute left, the Huskies attempted to get a final chance on the net, but it was to no avail.
Ames finished the evening with six shots and one on goal.
