BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg men's soccer used a strong showing to earn a conference win over Shippensburg Saturday afternoon, the second of the season for the team.
The Huskies (3-2-2, 2-1-1 PSAC East) controlled the game throughout the afternoon, finishing the day with a 27-7 shot advantage and drawing 13 fouls against an aggressive Raiders (3-2-1, 1-2-0 PSAC East) side.
Stephen Hollis (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) impacted the game as a provider turned goal scorer from set pieces, first sending in a ball tapped in by
Teagan Wallace (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) before scoring his first goal of the season from a free kick.
How It Happened:Â
Bloomsburg came out on the attack first in the match, with
Anthony Schlee (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) firing off three shots against Shippensburg goalkeeper Cody Willoughby.Â
Brady Rimple (Cherryville, Pa./Northampton Area) made his first save of the day after stopping an attempt from the left wing. From there, Bloomsburg continued the offensive with two corner opportunities and eight shots into the 30th minute.
After the Huskies drew a foul, Hollis stepped up to a familiar position over the ball. The defender sent a ball to the front post, finding a streaking Wallace poked the ball past the Raiders' defense for a 1-0 lead.Â
With limited time remaining in the half, Bloomsburg was awarded a critical scoring opportunity with the penalty.
Alex Wilsterman (Orefield, Pa./Parkland) stepped up to the spot but could not convert after a spectacular save from Willoughby to keep it a one-goal game heading into halftime.Â
Shippensburg began to acclimate to the game, finding several opportunities in the first 15 minutes, including four corner kicks. The Huskies answered with further scoring opportunities in the following 15 minutes.
After drawing a yellow card just outside the box in the 82nd minute, Hollis again took his place over the ball. The graduate defender took a few steps back before stepping up and powering a shot into the top right corner of the net.
Bloomsburg would run out the remaining eight minutes of the contest to come away with their first home win of the season.
On The Horizon:
The Huskies are back in Steph Pettit Stadium on Wednesday, September 27, at 6:00 p.m. for a midweek conference contest against Lock Haven.
