Football Falls to East Stroudsburg on Homecoming

Bloomsburg, Pa. – The Bloomsburg football team fell to East Stroudsburg, 31-0, Saturday afternoon. The Huskies dropped to 3-3 on the year and 1-2 in PSAC East play while the Warriors improved to 5-1 on the year and 2-1 in conference play.

Both teams were kept off the scoreboard in the first quarter, but the Warriors took advantage of a couple interceptions to build a 17-0 lead before halftime.

ESU got on the board first with a 40-yard field goal with 12:19 to play in the second quarter. On the very first play from scrimmage on the Huskies' ensuing drive, Everette Dingle intercepted KJ Riley (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) and returned it 36 yards to set ESU up at the Bloomsburg nine-yard line. The Warriors needed just one pass to take a 10-0 lead with 11:54 to play.

The Huskies drove the field on their next possession as Bloomsburg picked up three first downs on six plays to get to midfield. Riley then connected with Matthew Bowes (Somerton, Pa./La Salle College HS) for a 20-yard play to switch the field and get into ESU territory. Riley got the Huskies down to the ESU-31 but the Warriors came away with another interception to get the ball back at their own 24-yard line with 5:28 to play. ESU put together a 10-play, 93-yard drive to drain 4:58 off the clock and take a 17-0 lead with Sean McTaggart's second touchdown pass, this time to Evan Roche with 30 seconds to play. The Huskies ran just one play after the kickoff before halftime.

After another scoreless third quarter, the Warriors scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to take a 31-0 advantage.

In the third, the Warriors worked their way to the Bloomsburg 19-yard line but a stop on 3rd-and-7 by Ron Long (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) kept ESU out of the endzone and set them up for a 36-yard field goal attempt. Charles Crews III (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) and Neurys Ortiz (Union City, N.J./Union City) got over the line and Crews blocked the attempt. The ball was batted forward enough for Devin Fleming (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) to recover at the BLOOM-40 and set the Huskies up with decent field position. The Warriors forced a three-and-out however on the next drive to keep Bloomsburg off the board.

Defensively, Ryan D'Ambra (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Brady Thompson (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) led the Huskies with nine tackles each while they had 1.0 TFL (1 yard). Crews had five tackles and Long, Cole Turner (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) and Ryan Woertz (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had four tackles a piece. Giovanni Cancro (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock Township) had a five-yard sack for the Huskies.

Matt Buchman (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) rank for 52 yards on 18 carries while Jerry Griffen-Batchler (Norristown, Pa./Germantown Academy) had two catches for 24 yards. Gabe Brower (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) had two carries for 11 yards and 97 kickoff return yards – including a career-best 72-yard return in the fourth quarter.

The Huskies get back to action next Saturday as they make the short trip to Lock Haven for a 6:00 p.m. contest against the Bald Eagles.
