Volleyball Comeback Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to Lock Haven

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg volleyball team dropped a wire-to-wire, five-set Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest to Lock Haven, 3-2 (25-18, 24-26, 20-25, 25-17, 14-16), inside the Nelson Field House on Friday night.

Marlee Johnson (Newville, Pa./Big Spring) posted a team-high 17 kills and now sits in fourth all-time in career kills for the Huskies with 491. Emily Gustie (Crofton, Md./Crofton) finished just behind Johnson with 16 kills, setting a new career-high. Gustie also posted a career-high in aces with six. Katie Kuehl (Aston, Pa./Archmere Academy (Del.)) notched double-digit kills as well, finishing the day with 12.

Elise Adelman (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) nearly recorded a triple-double, posting 42 assists, 12 digs and seven blocks.

Defensively, the Huskies had six players finish with double-digit digs, with Gustie tallying a team-leading 20.

The first set saw Bloomsburg (7-14, 4-4 PSAC East) and Lock Haven (5-11, 3-5) exchange points to an early 6-6 deadlock. A 4-1 Huskies' run saw Gustie and Sophie Wales (Port Matilda, Pa./State College) each record a pair of kills before the Bald Eagles gained an 11-10 lead with a four-point swing. Johnson notched two kills while Wales picked up a pair of service aces in a five-point sequence that surged the maroon and gold ahead. A back-and-forth exchange moved the score to 19-15 before two Gustie kills and back-to-back aces from Maura Uschock (Irwin, Pa./Hempfield) helped the Huskies close out the first set, 25-18.

Lock Haven took control of the second frame early with four kills in a 6-1 run. A 9-4 Bloomsburg run featuring six kills knotted the score at 10 apiece. The sides exchange scores to move the set to 15-15 before the bald Eagles grabbed a late four-point lead on three straight kills and an ace. The Huskies responded with three kills and an ace of their own to tie the game at 19-19. Lock Haven eventually went on to take the second set, 26-24.

The third set saw the Bald Eagles jump ahead to a 9-2 advantage. The Huskies attempted to close the gap with a three-point run, however a 7-2 Lock Haven sequence pushed the visitors' lead to 16-7. Six kills in an 8-4 Bloomsburg run brought the score to 20-15 before Lock Haven once again pulled ahead to a 24-16 lead. Four-straight point from the maroon and gold would not be enough as the Bald Eagles took set three, 25-20.

Bloomsburg came out firing on all cylinders in the fourth set, as Gustie posted three aces as the Huskies went up 5-0 early. After a quick back-and-forth exchange, moved the score to 7-4 before a three-run burst pushed the maroon and gold to a 10-4 lead. A 4-1 Lock Haven run brought the score to 11-8 before the teams traded points to a 16-13 Huskies' lead. Lock Haven went on a 5-2 run to move within two before giving the Huskies back the serve on a service error. With Bloomsburg ahead 19-16, Kuehl record four kills in a 6-1 Huskies' run to force a fifth set.

It was all Bloomsburg to start the final set as Gustie opened the frame with back-to-back aces. Johnson furthered the Huskies' lead with four-straight kills. A pair of attack errors put Lock Haven on the board before exchanging points to a 10-5, maroon and gold advantage. From there the Bald Eagles recorded an 11-4 run to complete the fifth-set comeback.
