Football Falls to #8 Kutztown on the Road Saturday Afternoon

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Bloomsburg football team fell to #8 Kutztown, 41-10, Saturday afternoon. The Huskies dropped to 3-2 on the year and 1-1 in the PSAC East while the Golden Bears improved to 5-0 for the season and 2-0 in conference play.

The Golden Bears got out to a 14-0 lead with a pair of touchdown drives to bookend the first quarter.

After the Huskies forced a punt on the second play of the second quarter, junior KJ Riley (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) put together the first scoring drive of the game for the Huskies. After a four-yard catch by Gabe Brower (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) got Bloomsburg down to the BLLOOM 26, Riley carried the ball for eight yards and a Husky first down. On 3rd-and-6, Riley connected with Jerry Griffen-Batchler (Norristown, Pa./Germantown Academy) for 19 yards down to the Kutztown 43-yard line. Justin Wolfe (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) carried the ball twice for 16 yards to get to the KUTZ-27. Three straight runs from Matt Buchman (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) got the Huskies to the 19-yard line. Riley capped the drive with a 38-yard field goal, the longest of his career.

The Golden Bears answered with a touchdown drive to push their lead to 21-3 with 4:50 to play in the second.

The Huskies got down to the Kutztown-17 on their next drive but couldn't convert on 4th-and-2 with 1:10 to play. Kutztown was driving on its next possession, but Devin Fleming (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) picked off Judd Novak for his first career interception and the first pick thrown by a Kutztown QB. The Huskies got the ball back with 12 seconds to play before halftime, but a Husky fumble halted a scoring chance, and the teams went into the locker room with KU up 21-3.

Kutztown received the kickoff to start the third and attempted a lateral but Nyree Ford-Cherry (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) forced a fumble and Louden Murphy (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) recovered the ball at the Kutztown-20 to give the Huskies excellent field position. The Huskies ran the ball six-straight times from the 20 with the last a four-yard touchdown run for Brower to cut the Kutztown lead to 21-10.

The Golden Bears answered the Huskies' drive with a scoring drive of their own to push the lead to 28-10 with 1:03 to play in the third. Kutztown intercepted the Huskies for the second time at the 13:04 mark to start the fourth and needed just one 35-yard play to take a 35-10 lead.

Kutztown forced a punt on the next Husky drive and went 62-yards on 13 plays to extend their lead to 42-10 with 2:31 to play. The Huskies got as far as their own 43-yard line but couldn't convert on fourth down and the Golden Bears kneeled to end to the game.

Brower caught three passes for 28 yards while Griffen-Batchler had two catches for 19 yards. Riley carried the ball six time for 39 yards while Buchman had 13 carries for 25 yards. Brower had the lone touchdown on offense, a four-yard run.
